That's fine with me. USF is an up and coming team in a BCS conference. Their recruiting is picking up in Fl. By the time they hit our schedule, they might sit nicely in the middle of the pack.

I certainly hope not!

Why? Look at the progress they've made. At this rate, by the time they would appear on the schedule, they would be at least on par with BYU, Boston College and maybe Stanford and GT. Probably better than Purdue by that point as well. They are a BCS conference team with an excellent coach whose only real fault is a poorly chosen resume.

Not to mention it will be a game on our terms in Florida, which could really help with recruiting.

Consider that we now have a deal to play an X number of Big East teams. Which is a better benefit to us exposure-wise? Playing in Morgantown or in the heart of the best state for football talent?

It would seem to me that a lot of these future schedule moves have something to do with recruiting.

It shouldn't matter were you play....if ND can win a championship this year and truely be back they should be able to play a game in Canada and still attract top talent from Florida.....back in the late 80's early 90's they were able to land talent just based upon the fact that they were ND and ND=National Title Contenders....once we get back to that it shouldn't matter about were we play, just that we play and win.

I won't argue with that, but remember, this is how our fanbase became the national entity it is today-Rock took his "ramblers" on the road and played teams in the south and on the coasts when the midwest powers were spurning them.

And if it doesn't matter who we play, what's wrong with playing them? UCF was better than half the teams on our schedule last year.

I agree it is just that ND-UCF is not going to draw the amount of fans or interest nationwide that a ND-GT game will....there are other powers around the country that we should look to play, ie. SEC and Big 12 teams.....instead of ND-UCF why not a ND-Alabama game or get Miami back on the schedule. I don't think we "steal" too many kids away from UCF but from Miami, Alabama, Texas; we do.

First of all, I want to apologize for confusing UCF with USF, who I should have been mentioning.

Even so, USF has more appeal than BYU or Army who are also on our schedule. We play the big boys. ND doesn't back down. But you can't schedule #'s 1-12 and expect to escape alive. I'm am not in favor of a totally watered down schedule, but to expect these guys to get up for one top ten team after another is not reasonable.

The issue here is location.

If Notre Dame has a home and away two game series with Nevada, San Diego State, South Florida, etc....they're getting into the markets of those areas with a LIVE game, not a 5 hour NBC broadcast.

There is an element of live exposure to these away games where the recruits from Miami, Florida State and Florida's backyards will get to head up to South Florida and see ND live. North Carolina kids considering Clemson and UNC will get to see ND play Duke if they choose to make the drive.

I think there is a lot to be said for that.

I don't mind the idea, gives recruits who live in Florida a chance to see ND in action in their own backyards.

DEAD ON!

i agree that playing usf would be a mediocre draw and really give a pat on the back to a team that is proving itself, but why travel the country challenging teams like this. we can still play usf as part of the big east deal, use the traveling games to step it up. like kmac said, get miami in jacksonville or bama in new orleans. texas in dallas, or even texas a&m as a throw back to the 90's cotton bowls, or even ou. why not??? one every other year or something along those lines. these games need to be a spectacle through and through. not a build up to a thumping in a lopsided game. i haven't checked out schedule to see how these would work but do this....watch the highlights on youtube of the miami games and florida st. games and tell me you dont want to see that again.

Miami, Texas, etc... would never agree to this. If we want to play in them in their states, they would want to play in their houses.

It's not like we don't have powerhouses already on upcoming schedules. And it's not like the likes of FSU and Texas could not come up again as a true home and home, but as far as the regular neutral sites go, you're not going to get those teams.

That may happen as well, but ND is going to play these neutral site games. You have to play somebody.

Maybe that is true but every effort must be made to make ND an attractive school for the southern kids. ND will not win the NC every year and we all know that at least 1 of the Florida schools will be in the national title hunt every year. The Irish need to make themselves an attractive alternative to the local power schools. A game in Florida against a BCS conference Florida school is a reasonable solution.

Yes 3 teams: Florida State, Florida, and Miami.

OK then, you put a gun to the AD at one of those schools and force him to agree to play us at the neutral site of our choosing with us getting a large portion of the gate. Good luck with that.

Undoubtedly. ND will probably try and get juniors to attend those games when they're in Florida so that heading into their senior year, they'll be more likely to make the trek to South Bend.

exactly, Juniors will get to see the Irish not too far from homne and so when they are seniors they are more inclined to come to South Bend.

No need for a neutral site, just play them as road games.

Well, I guess ND could try and join the ACC. That would help get them games with 2 of the 3 big Florida schools.

but if they're playing usf you know the atmosphere wont be at a high level which would suck. i wouldnt want to go to that game, so why would a recruit be impressed? they have to play someone better if they're going to attract 1) a big game vibe 2) recruits and 3) fans of any kind.

You may be right about the first two but the third is a given anywhere ND plays. When's the last time ND played a neutral site game that wasn't sold out?

there's a huge difference between playing against northwestern in chicago at the coliseum and in jacksonville against usf. chicago is FULL of nd fans, it's right down the highway. they also dont have the pull navy does seeing as we play them every year out of tradition. usf in jacksonville wouldnt even make anyone's last ditch effort ticket lottery entry slot.

i still think it would be good to play usf, just as part of the normal big east contract. neutral site games other than navy need to be against teams from the acc, sec, or big 12 and are regularly in the top half of the conference. anything less would be lame. go big or go home. there's no point bragging out this rockne style scheduling if we play a pansy.

I see your point and agree with you. I was just arguing that scheduling and playing a Florida school anywhere in the state is a pretty good idea. Especially a very winnable game like a matchup with USF.

i see. i just wish we'd go all out. mich and usc are great staples but even they fluxiate as high ranking opponents. i like the idea of pulling teams from the region too. like ou in dallas as i stated earlier. maybe we could play georgia, ole miss, or....duh duh duuuuuhhhhhh....south carolina.

maybe i'm too anxious to see future scheduling. does anyone know of a link to a site with loose scheduling past the 2007 season????
