What is the QB endgame?

Unless I am mistaken, Brian Kelly has made it clear that a running QB is required to make the offense fully effective. Knowing this, are we really going to have Tommy Rees start for 2 more years. Because as long as Tommy Rees plays well, which he has, I don't see how you can take the starting job away from him just because one of the other QBs has more potential. I guess I just don't understand how we get there. And I have a hard time believing that after 4 years Kelly won't have a running QB irrespective of the play of Rees and the current QB situation.

I was wondering this too. While I am okay with
Rees as long as he continues to get wins, I want to see the full spread (running threat from the qb position). My best guess is that Kelly will use a two qb system. I have mixed feelings about doing this for 2 more years... but he is a much better coach than I could ever be

Turnover Tommy for another 2 years? No thanks. I want a QB that doesn't turn it over like him. I can live with him more if he could actually run a little. But, he absolutely can't.

Oh well, he is our QB and we have to roll with it.

Go Irish.

Yet you really enjoy running to every thread and posting about it.

He had 2 turnovers yesterday if you want to count the throw to Wood but I would say that is much more Wood's fault than Rees. The Floyd throw wasn't a good throw by any means but Floyed let a tiny DB take that ball from him. So Rees gets on turnover for the game.

Turnover Tommy actually has evolved into Terrified Tommy. He's started to realize the team can't afford him to turnover the ball over so much so whenever there is pressure now his decision is to panic and throw the ball away. I guess it's better than a turnover but seems pretty juvenile for a big-time D1 program like ND to have to suffer through a QB with those limitations.

You have got to be kidding me. He threw the ball away 2-3 times last night. That is called smart football. Barkley threw the ball away 3-4 times, is he playing scared too? SMH.

I agree that one was on Wood. But the INT was definitely on Tommy. Floyd was stationary and Rees threw it about 2 yards to the right of him.

I think Rees played well but my point is that him playing well does not fully capitalize on the spread offense and I wonder how Kelly intends to handle the QB position in the coming year at most.

End game is next spring it's wide open again.
There is no excuse for not having the full playbook installed by the time next season rolls around.
So either Tommy makes strides going into his 3rd year and proves he can run the spread without mobility or Hendrix and Golson need to step up and take over.

You ARE mistaken. Kelly has said, over and over again, that he doesn't need a running QB; his QB just needs to have some escapability, to extend plays. He has consistently pointed to Tony Pike at Cincy, as a perfect example of a guy who was not a runner, but ran his offense very well. The most important thing in Kelly's offense is a QB who can make good pre snap reads. You guys(the Running QB Clan) do realize that Kelly's QB sets up his own protection, and audibles many of his receivers' routes, don't you? And most of his calls have a run/pass option, based on the look of the defense. A QB's athletic ability means absolutely squat, if the guy can't get the offense into the right play and the right blocking schemes. Tommy Rees IS the future of ND football, at QB. He's only a true sophomore! He's not going to be a high draft pick next year, even if he plays lights out. NFL scouts are still going to want to know if he is going to be a turnover machine. If he can put two seasons together, without being Turnover Tommy, THEN he will be a highly rated draft pick. That's going to take both his junior and senior years.

I like Rees, but what was with that option play in the first half? Did somebody drop acid in the Gatorade?

Tommy is a great kid, but it seems funny to mention him and the NFL in the same sentence while he still doesn't have a full grasp on college ball.
