Yesterday I was hanging out with a buddy who is a huge SC fan and has access to USC's Scout board. They had a recruiting chat, and I sat in on it for a while. Here's some of what they said somewhat pertaining to ND:
1. They thought they had Christian Westerman in the bag, to the point that the recruiting insider said he was shocked when he chose to Texas. Even Christian's family members thought he was going to USC. They assumed that the USC coaches must be shocked too, because he just visited SC this past weekend, came home and promptly chose UT. And the SC guy says Christian is a stand up guy who will stick to his commitment.
ND never really had a shot here but this story still made me smile when I heard it, 'cause he didn't choose SC of course. And all the SC fans are saying that he chose TX because he's scared to compete because of Sentrell LOL. Typical. They ignored the fact TX has signed 5 other OL that he'll have to compete with for 4-5 years, but whatever.
2. Even though they offered Prestwood, he never gave them a look and they knew quickly they had no shot.
3. They feel they have a very good shot at Anthony Varnett, who just had a great visit to ND at our spring practice. Varnett has ND, Mich, and USC standing out to him right now. Apparently he's telling the USC recruitnik great things about SC. Should be a good race for him, although SC is stacked at receiver right now (they are in great shape to land George Farmer, former teammate of SC commit Robert Woods. He called FGarmer as close to a lock as you'll find in recruiting).
4. On a non-recruiting note, Jawanza Starling, who had ND in 2nd place in his recruiting, is in line to start after really turning heads this spring despite missing some time due to baseball. That one hurt when he got away.
5. The people in the USC football/athletic offices feel very positive about their fate with the NCAA. Just shoot me now if these a**holes get away with it. Hope they're just being arrogant. He also said he had no idea when the sanctions would come down.
