Tackling a tough decision
Prep's Quinn could switch from Penn State to Notre Dame

The time was mid-September and football star Steve Quinn, of St. Joseph's Prep, was making an oral commitment to Penn State.
At that juncture, Notre Dame had not offered a scholarship.
If so...
"He likely would have thought about that hard," Prep coach Gil Brooks said that day. "That could have complicated things."
"I don't know that I definitely would have gone there," Quinn said, "but it could have made things interesting."
Steve Quinn - star linebacker, wideout, master of understatement.
Things have mushroomed from interesting to flat-out wild.
As of late last night, according to his father, John, Quinn was thinking hard of backing out of his oral commitment to Penn State and this morning signing a letter of intent with Notre Dame.
A jump-switch would make him the third city-leagues player to back out of an oral commitment, joining Conwell-Egan back Steve Slaton (Maryland, now West Virginia) and Cardinal O'Hara lineman Matt Lowry (Virginia, now Penn State).
"This is difficult," John Quinn said, "because both schools have been great to Steve. But I think he's leaning Notre Dame's way."
Brooks echoed that sentiment.
"I know Steve would feel very awkward about backing out of a commitment to Penn State," he said. "But I believe it's going to happen. I think he feels Notre Dame would be his best overall fit."
The 6-4, 220-pound Quinn recently was offered a visit to Notre Dame and decided to take it last weekend.
"He hasn't slept much since," his father said. "He was up until 2:30 [Tuesday] morning and up deep into the a.m. the night before.
"He does need to get this over with. Our house has been like a switchboard."
Steve and John Quinn had not spoken by late last night. Steve and other Prep students are on a religious retreat in Malvern and will not return to the school until 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Contact with the outside world is generally not permitted, but John Quinn said his son had received permission from Prep's administration to make one call to his family.
"Since we haven't heard from him, it's obvious he's still agonizing over this," the elder Quinn said. "One of us [his wife is Pat] will drive to Malvern early in the morning and we'll see which school's papers he wants to sign."
