Old EsPN must be desperate for ratings or web hits or something....Get a load of this scathing ND-hater article...This 'journalist' doesn't even have the decency or skill set, to refer to FATHER Jenkins properly....Can't wait for him to eat crow....or maybe he can write another book on that guy that coaches UW...I wonder how has last book did....AT ANY RATE, NO ND-HATER can bring down the good vibes flowing for this season and esp. for tomorrow!!!

GO IRISH!!!!!

this guy has no credibility. NONE. nothing in the current article amounts to more than pessimistic speculation regarding ND's motives for the TW firing, etc. he doesn't provide a single shred of truth - instead, it's nothing more than a whiny rant of a conspiracy theorist who's thin on facts and bursting with loyalty for a coach that he played under while at stanford.

his book? this is what publishers weekly had to say about it:

From Publishers Weekly
In a plodding portrayal that is reverent to a fault, Grant, a writer for ESPN, chronicles the challenges and triumphs of Tyrone Willingham's first year at the helm of the nation's most storied college football team: the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Grant highlights the significance and pressure on Willingham as the school's first black coach in any sport, and he does provide the requisite behind-the-scenes glimpses of the program that are sure to pique the interest of any Irish fan. Indeed, one of the most engrossing incidents features Willingham derisively breaking down tape of his former team, Stanford, and clearly laying the blame at the feet of its new coach. But the writing itself is formulaic and dull. Aside from painful extended metaphors like describing Willingham and the team as a jazz combo, Grant occasionally strays from his otherwise distant, professional tone with awkward dips into slang that he seems to think sports talk demands. He refers to Touchdown Jesus, a mosaic on the university library, as having a "certain bling-bling"; he describes an opposing receiver as getting "truly Heisman on their asses"; and at one point he bizarrely refers to Willingham as "the most popular Negro in America." In addition, Grant is so adoring of Willingham that the coach hardly comes across as human. Grant played football for him at Stanford, and a first-person player's perspective would have been revealing. The book has enough details and anecdotes to keep a rabid Notre Dame fan turning pages, but it will hardly be of interest to a wider audience or leave much of a mark in the realm of sports literature.

I guess the book's riveting plot and informative analysis are the reasons why it's a stalwart at #376,018 on Amazon's list.....I'd expect better from a grad from the "ND of the West". Can't wait for the sequal!!

The fact that the writer writes about ND at all but even further "hates ND," disproves the premise of his entire article, i.e., that ND is no longer relevant.

It is great to be hated!

I just don't think the guy is very smart - even though he did attend Stanford.

I agree. Maybe he should shave his head now. By the way, is that lady at ND still bald?

How to spell idiot = Alan Grant. I am surprised he could spell Notre Dame.

That article was so angry, refusing to honor a priest with his proper title and calling the student body 'larvae,' and fueling what is nothing more than a conspiracy theory regarding USC.

Alan Grant should be fired for such irresponsible behavior.

For the record, Elmer Layden was fired for dropping below .800, Kuharich was pink-slipped on Christmas Eve, and Hunk Anderson only "got" 3 years as head coach. Giving Faust 5 years WAS the exception, and Davie would have been disposed of earlier if not for his '98 and '00 records.

The Tradition is winning. Look on posters and shirts from the late-80s and you'll see four people: Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian, Devine, and Holtz.

Goofballs like Grant will retreat into the anuses of history like all those that tried to rewrite ND before and failed. People like him are incapable of understanding Notre Dame, so they index it against places like Stanford that they can understand. ND truly is like nowhere else.

Unfortunately, all Grant is doing is reinforcing the old belief that you should never hire a minority because you can't fire one without a 'scandal.'
