It'll get swept under the rug. America's favorite double standard.

I heard about it on Mike & the Mad Dog (660 WFAN in NYC) yesterday (and only b/c a caller brought it up), but I'm not sure when he actually said it. They both agreed he should be fired (actually, they said he should've been fired long, long ago).

If I were Romo I'd make it a story. All Tony Romo has to do is come out and say he's offended. Especially since #1. Tony Romo's not even white, he's FRIGGIN MEXICAN-AMERICAN, or at least part. It says on Wikipedia his grandfather came here from Mexico, maybe his mom is white, I dunno. (although I guess Irvin would just say that explains why he's a good athlete. I suppose latinos are allowed to be good athletes too to bigots like Irivin), and #2. Irvin suggested Romo's ancestors owned slaves, which I doubt given his background.

God I hate Michael Irivin & ESPN...

I haven't heard anything on this story. I want to say unbelievable, but it really isn't considering its Michael Irvin. I never thought espn should have hired this guy in the first place, now after those comments and the guy gave him a chance to correct his message and all he did was reinforce it, see ya.

Like the one comment said on the bottom, espn decides what is news and what isn't and obviously they are trying to ignore this one.

Yeah, but he probly didn't wanna deal w/ all the "Notre Dame is a bunch of racist c**ksuckers!" comments he'd get in response to bringing up that one. At least that's why I'd of left it out.

I dunno. I heard Michael Irvin actually say the words. It reads differently than it sounded. Don't get me wrong, I hate Michael Irvin. I think he is an idiot. But he was clearly just messing around. He shouldn't have said what he said because it was still inappropriate, but there is no doubt it was meant to be a joke. It sounded more like a joke based on a stereotype people have that african americans are better athletes, not that he truly believes they are.

If ESPN decides its not news, then it isn't news. Unforutunately, that is the way it is. ESPN will not go after one of its own guys because it will give the network a black eye too.

I believe that Irvin stated this comment as a joke. However, because it is a sensitive subject, he should have been on higher alert not to make that comment.

Hornung's comment last year about ND needing more black athletes was due in part to the stereotype or belief that there is some "black gene" which allows for superior athleticism. Hornung got blasted for such a comment. However, Irvin's comment would only serve to reinforce Hornung's comment as Irvin is essentially acknowledging that there is a "black gene" which has allowed Romo to become a better athlete.

I'm surprised that the black community would not come after Irvin for making comments which help reinforce a stereotype about the black community.

Irving should be fired. Not necessarily for this comment, but for all the other crap he has done. How does this guy have a job?

We, as a society, need to define what is a joke and what isn't.

But the rules apply for everyone regardless of age, race, gender, underwear size and political affiliation.

Yeah, I agree. People say, "Oh he was just joking" but when someone who's white says something like that, he's never "just joking." Steve Lyons is the perfect example, and what he joked about was a whole lot less obvious.

Like it or not, right or wrong, agree or disagree there is definitely a different perception when a black person says what Irvin said and when a white person does. That's why all broadcasters should know NOT TO EVEN BRING IT UP. NOT EVEN AS A JOKE.

He should be fired because two weeks ago I heard him say "He don't fear me" in regard to a NFL player's ability.
