Hey guys,
New poster but fairly long-time reader.
My question is about the Kelly's offensive scheme for this game and for the rest of the season. Will he continue to rely upon the quick strike, high percentage passing using four wide sets, and a one back zone read running game? This has been pretty effective during the first three games and Crist seems to be getting a lot more comfortable. The running game has shown some flashes, though we seemed to go away from it a little bit against MSU.
Or will he mix things up a little bit? Will he put in any KellyCat formations? I would like to see Armando and maybe Goody back there. We would be able to move Theo in the backfield with Armando to create some good mismatches. And it would also be nice to see some power formations with Crist under center, particularly in short yardage and goal line situations. Put Jonas or Hughes back there to provide more of a power running threat. I don't really like seeing 3 and 1 with Crist in shotgun where any run play requires five yards just to get back to the line of scrimmage. It seems like many great teams have the ability to dominate the line of scrimmage in any formation.
Again, I like what Kelly has done with the offense so far and am confident that he knows what he is doing. I just think it will be interesting to see what new wrinkles he will/ or will not throw out there as the season progresses. Like he said early on, the full offensive scheme will not be put in until next season at the earliest. The offense has shown that it can be consistent and fairly reliable, but will it become truly explosive?
Anyways, I'm excited for the rest of the season. As we know, most of these games will come down to the last drives with more thrilling victories and heartbreaking defeats (hopefully more of the former). We will have our ups and downs, but I think it will come down to whether or not these kids will continue to work to get better each week and buy into Kelly's philosophy. We will see what kind of "Fighting Irish" we really have.
Go Irish!
