Dionte Allen
Likely the No. 2 cornerback on Notre Dame's wishlist, the 6-foot, 175-pound Allen of Orchard Lake, Mich., already holds offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Florida State. The Wolverines will be tough to beat, but the Irish will get their shot, particularly if Allen's recruitment lasts into the season and Notre Dame beats Michigan for a third straight season. Charlie Weis couldn't ask for a better pitch that topping the Wolverines head-to-head. Allen visited Notre Dame for its Jan. 14 junior day and was named a junior All-American.
Eric Berry
There might not be a tougher get on this list than the 6-0, 180-pound Berry, who played primarily at quarterback last season for Creekside High School in Fairburn, Ga. Most of the SEC has already offered including Georgia, Florida, LSU and Tennessee, with Ohio State and Miami offers thrown in for good measure. Notre Dame has shown interest but will face a tough fight for Berry's attention. Last year Berry rushed for 1,200 yards, threw for 1,100 and added 67 tackles plus five interceptions on defense. He visited Georgia last weekend for a junior day.
Ryan Broyles
One of the top juniors in Oklahoma, Broyles already holds offers from Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The Sooners probably won't be far behind in chasing down the 5-11, 160-pound cornerback considering he's from Norman. Last year Broyles made 31 tackles and five interceptions after recording 58 stops and nine picks as a sophomore. Oklahoma isn't usually a recruiting hotbed for Notre Dame, but the Irish did sign George West from the state last season. Broyles plans to attend the Nike Camp at Texas A&M on April 22, which could drastically improve his stock.
Donnie Evege
Ohio State is firmly entrenched as the favorite and many believed the 5-11, 185-pound cornerback planned to commit to the Buckeyes soon after Signing Day earlier this month. The Huber Heights, Ohio athlete visited Notre Dame for its Jan. 14 junior day, a trip that should at least keep the Irish in the mix. However, it would rate as a surprise if Evege decided to leave his home state. Purdue and West Virginia have also offered scholarships. Last season Evege posted 31 tackles to go with 527 yards rushing and approximately 300 yards receiving.
Cedric Everson
Most years a player of Everson's skill level would probably rate as Michigan's top cornerback, but the state's junior class is loaded. Still, the 5-11, 154-pound cornerback still ranks among the state's best with offers in hand from Michigan State, Indiana and Iowa. Everson visited Notre Dame for its Jan. 14 junior day followed by trips to Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa. Working in Notre Dame's favor is Everson's friendship with Irish receiver David Grimes, both from the Detroit area. As a junior, Everson made 55 tackles, five sacks and seven interceptions.
Gary Gray
The No. 1 cornerback on Notre Dame's board expects to visit South Bend for the March 4 junior day, no small trip considering he's from Columbia, S.C. The junior All-American already holds offers from Michigan, Auburn, Tennessee and Texas to name a few. The hometown Gamecocks will be a major player in this race. Last season Gray made 60 tackles, four interceptions and broke up 14 passes. Gray's high school coach at Richland Northeast, Jay Frye, worked on the Gamecocks staff with Charlie Weis as a graduate assistant in the 1980's.
Ronald Johnson
Michigan's other national recruit in the defensive backfield, the 6-0, 177-pound Johnson is also getting looks as a receiver prospect. Whether it's cornerback, safety or wide out, the Muskegon product will rank among the nation's best despite missing most of last season with a torn ACL. Johnson visited Notre Dame for the USC game and last summer for a passing camp. As with Allen, Michigan must be considered at least a slight leader, but the Irish will get their shot. Johnson plans to visit Notre Dame this summer for another passing camp.
Jordan Mabin
Another prospect that visited Notre Dame for its Jan. 14 junior day, the 5-11, 185-pound Mabin could finish the recruiting season as a running back prospect depending on his school of choice. Indiana and Pittsburgh have already offered the Nordonia, Ohio standout that's rushed for more than 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons while racking up 61 touchdowns on the ground. Mabin plans to attend the Nike Camp at Ohio State on May 5 with junior day trips already in the books to Michigan and Ohio State. Northwestern could also be a player here.
Golden Tate
One of the top juniors in Tennessee, the 5-11, 175-pound Tate already holds offers from Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. Tate said Notre Dame has expressed plenty of interest but the Irish haven't offered. The Hendersonville standout also said he wants to learn more about Florida, Miami and Florida State. Tate did it all last season for Pope John Paul II, rushing for 2,191yards and 26 touchdowns while making 76 catches for 1,648 yards and another 21 touchdowns. With those kinds of stats, Tate will get plenty of looks on offense.
Michael Williams
More of a safety at the high school level, Williams has picked up a few looks as a cornerback as well. Michigan and Arizona State have already offered the 5-11, 180-pound athlete from Ventura, Calif., who plays in the same St. Bonaventure program that produced current Irish cornerback Terrail Lambert. USC and Notre Dame rank as Williams' early favorites. Last season he posted 94 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. Considering Notre Dame's limited openings at safety, an offer for Williams might not come quickly.
