Minter will be running the 4-2-5 defense this year with the irish.
4 down linemen
2 pure linebackers
4 defensive backs (probably 2 corners and 2 safeties, depending on the coverage)
the 5th "defensive back" is a hybrid small linebacker/big strong safety
"The starting line should be Abiamiri, Laws, Landri & Leitko.
The starting linebackers should be Hoyte and Mays.
Based on the Blue & Gold game, the starting "back five" should be Richardson, Ferrine, Zbikowski, Parish & Ndukwe, though I expect to see Lambert, Jabbie and/or Vernaglia start at some time during the season.
This defense should be good at stopping the spread and other pass-happy offenses (Minter vastly improved South Carolina's defense in the pass-happy SEC in his only season there), but it remains to be seen if it can stop the run (though Minter's defenses at Ball State, Notre Dame, and Cincinnati were good against the run).
I've read that Minter relies on his defensive line to attack and get into the backfield to cause disruption, rather than holding the line to allow the linebackers to make plays. I'm not sure what that means for his linebacking corps, whether they will be required to cover their zones and stuff the run holes or something to that extent, since they probably will not be required to blitz often." -uhnd.com
its going to be a breath of fresh air to see the irish doing some new things on defense. I hope we get to see Ndukwe lay some big hits on people, because he will be used to blitz the outside alot.
