For the benefit of those not in the know of FCS/1-AA Football, the playoffs are almost through, and my University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens are going to the National championship to try and stop a Three-peat by Appalachian State - the monsters who took down Michigan in Week 1, and will finish out the season by playing a team with the winged helmet look as well (originated at Princeton, taken to UM and UD by same coach).
#5 App State has scraped by in the first two rounds, beating #12 JMU a narrow 28-27, saved by a late JMU fumble on the App State 5 in the last seconds of the game, and #14 Eastern Washington 38-35. QB has rushed for 315 yards in the last game, as well as throwing a few deep ones on the way to a 55-35 victory over University of Richmond in the semi-finals. The game was tied late in the 3rd quarter before App State dropped 20 unanswered points.
#10 UD opened the playoffs by blowing out #11 Delaware State 44-7, nearly shutting them out but fumbling the ball near their own end zone late in the 4th quarter, but played #1 UNI (inside a Dome, that thing was LOUD!) and #4 SIU on the road the last two weeks, beating them 39-27 and 20-17 respectively. UD's 6'6" 250 lb QB Joe Flacco is ranked as the 5th best QB Nationally, completing 65% of his passes for nearly 4,000 yards, 22 TDs and 5 Interceptions. UD RB Omar Cuff currently has 34 rushing TDs (38 total) and 1,800 yards on the season, needing only 3 more to break the all time record (currently ranked 3rd), tying the NCAA record of 7 TDs in a game in the UD opener vs. William & Mary. Also of note is kicker John Streifsky, who is 82-87 kicks for the season with a long of 47.
Should be a good game, Friday, 8 PM on ESPN2 if you guys are up for watching some good Football!
