Everyone is on here and other chat rooms talking about how the season is over because we lost by 4 points to a ranked and markedly improved Michigan team and we BEAT (note: BEAT) Michigan State by 3 points. Here are my thoughts:
1. There is a common thread to the last 2 games: the referees. Both squads were from the Big 10 conference and both showed plenty of bias in our games. Essentially, we lost to Michigan because the Big 10 wanted them to win. There were baffling no calls on pass interference in that game that would be called by any other officiating crew. And again yesterday. Even Pat Hayden (a former USC quarterback who hates our guts) thought that Michael Floyd scored a touchdown. Phantom personal fouls were also a regular in the game. Not only did we beat a talented and highly motivated Michigan State team, but we beat the Big 10 refs as well. Its practically a crime what they have done to us the past 2 weeks and I hope that Swarbrick has the balls to go public about it. Look for more next week at Purdont.
2. Lets think about this for a minute. The week before the big Notre Dame game Sparty loses at home to Central Michigan. And the week before the big Notre Dame game Purdue loses at home to Northern Illinois. Now, in part this is because MSU and Purdue just aren't great teams. But I also am sure that both teams center their seasons around us (as many teams do) and were looking past their present opponents to playing the hated Irish. You see this every year. Someone will either lose the game after pulling out a tough one against us because of the emotional drain. Or they will lay an egg the week before because they are focusing completely on facing ND. Everyone talks about our weak strength of schedule but not one espn analyst or SI writer takes into account this fact: that every team that we play, Notre Dame is their biggest game of the year. You can see it in fan attendance levels at our games and at unheard of levels of play and coaching from the likes of MSU and Purdue and Michigan.
3. Nut up guys. We are three games into the season and all I see is bitching about Clausen who has put up numbers with McCoy and Tebow and whining about how "The season is overrrrrr
" because we lost one game in a close and hard-fought match to a team who is going to win 9-10 games this season. Its unbelievable the stupidity and hopelessness of the casual ND fan. You supposed "fans" are almost as hard to stomach as Mark May himself.
