yes he's practicing with the team. i'm not sure why this should excite us though. he's a walk-on kicker who has not taken any kicks in any college games.

whoever they put in there in game situations i hope makes it.

i just don't see how a walk-on rookie should excite us.

It may be true he is a walk on, but I knew a guy who walked on and he was a good kicker, it's not like he's a QB or something.

How about being excited because clearly it can't get any worse.

This can become much worse. The walk on, who has never kicked in a football game may not have the nerves, timing, or confidence to go into Seattle a make a fieldgoal, let alone a pat. If he doesn't come through, the confidence that Walker was getting is now down the drain because he was benched.

I would only give him a chance if we have a game well in hand... ease him in to a pressure situation

the presser on thursday was littered with questions about this kid. i also noticed that charlie seemed extreamly upbeat and loose. i think that is a good thing

I saw a preview for this on the Soth Bend morning news show this morning but forgot to turn it back on. I guess I will need to wait untill Irish Sports Report to see a story. What if he turns out like the kicker from Wake Forest? That would be sweet.

ya, we don't throw players under the bus with "f-him" here. you can objectively criticize a player's performance, but f-him isn't in that category.

Can we "f" the coach who does not ensure a proper snap and hold, thus providing a confident kick?

CDubs O philosophy doesn't seem to include a kicker. Seems to be an afterthought.

Just leave the guy alone.

Is this kid actually going to get on the field or is he just another kicker on the roster? In past weeks there were kicking competitions. Did he win the job at practice this week?

Walker's rough season got Ruffer
By ERIC HANSEN
Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND — The mystery of new Notre Dame kicker David Ruffer continued to unravel Thursday, with Irish head football coach Charlie Weis filling in all but one very significant blank.

What's the kid like?

"I couldn't tell you," Weis said, laughing at the microwaved process that turned an unknown Siegfried Hall interhall player in to a campus curiosity and beyond. "I've talked to the kid four times."

What Weis does know is that the 6-foot-1, 180-pound sophomore transfer from William & Mary does have a seat on the team charter that will take the Irish (4-2) to Seattle today for Saturday night's matchup with Washington (0-6).

"And there is a possibility he'll kick in this game," Weis added.

Sophomore Brandon Walker, 2-of-8 on field goals this season and 21-of-21 on PATs, will start out doing the place-kicking for the Irish Saturday night, but he if falters or if the game gets lopsided, Ruffer could get the call.

Weis said Ruffer, from Oakton, Va., made every single field goal attempt he tried Tuesday and Wednesday in practice, with his long attempts coming from 45 yards out.

"Right down the middle, with plenty to spare," the coach said.

Ruffer started working out with the team Oct. 14 after receiving clearance from the NCAA. The Gonzaga College High School product, who starred in golf — not football — at the Washington D.C. private school, will wear uniform No. 32, the same as injured fullback/tight end Luke Schmidt.

"After his first kick (Tuesday), everyone actually thought it was Luke Schmidt kicking out there, since he was wearing No. 32," Weis said. "But then as the next one went through and the next one went through and the next one went through, it wasn't a joke anymore. What started as a one-man Gong Show was no longer a laughing matter."

I would love to see this kid kick field goals tonite with Walker doing PATs. And what about the walk on kicker for Texas Tech? Two walk on kickers in the same week, some kind of record?
