Walker's rough season got Ruffer

SOUTH BEND — The mystery of new Notre Dame kicker David Ruffer continued to unravel Thursday, with Irish head football coach Charlie Weis filling in all but one very significant blank.
What's the kid like?
"I couldn't tell you," Weis said, laughing at the microwaved process that turned an unknown Siegfried Hall interhall player in to a campus curiosity and beyond. "I've talked to the kid four times."
What Weis does know is that the 6-foot-1, 180-pound sophomore transfer from William & Mary does have a seat on the team charter that will take the Irish (4-2) to Seattle today for Saturday night's matchup with Washington (0-6).
"And there is a possibility he'll kick in this game," Weis added.
Sophomore Brandon Walker, 2-of-8 on field goals this season and 21-of-21 on PATs, will start out doing the place-kicking for the Irish Saturday night, but he if falters or if the game gets lopsided, Ruffer could get the call.
Weis said Ruffer, from Oakton, Va., made every single field goal attempt he tried Tuesday and Wednesday in practice, with his long attempts coming from 45 yards out.
"Right down the middle, with plenty to spare," the coach said.
Ruffer started working out with the team Oct. 14 after receiving clearance from the NCAA. The Gonzaga College High School product, who starred in golf — not football — at the Washington D.C. private school, will wear uniform No. 32, the same as injured fullback/tight end Luke Schmidt.
"After his first kick (Tuesday), everyone actually thought it was Luke Schmidt kicking out there, since he was wearing No. 32," Weis said. "But then as the next one went through and the next one went through and the next one went through, it wasn't a joke anymore. What started as a one-man Gong Show was no longer a laughing matter."
