Zorich was the defensive version of what Flutie was to offense in college football. They were both undersized overachievers w/ hearts that couldn't be measured & a motor that wouldn't quit. Unfortunately, for them, it didn't translate to a HOF NFL career, but they each had a good run.

I'll never forget Zorich's performance in the bowl game vs. Colorado. He was a one-man wrecking crew that left everything out on the field. I think he was even named Player of the Game even though the Irish lost. I can see him wearing his jersey w/ the bottom half cut off & then sitting on the sideline after the game bawling his eyes out. The tragic part was that he went back home to Chicago after that game only to find his mother had passed away. He exudes class & is a person I'd love my son to aspire to.

You can't mention his on-field exploits w/o highlighting his academic career that took him to a high risk student who ended up graduating ND and then law school (also at ND if I recall correctly). I want to say he was one of only 2 or 3 Prop 48s that ND was ever allowed to admit. What a great payoff...he still serves ND well through his charity work.
