The only reason in my mind that the BIG could possibly agree to a scheduling agreement would be NBC. Without expansion, there isnt many ways to increase their TV revenue other than something like an alliance with ND.

I think this is the overlooked aspect of cancelling the series. It was in Lincoln Riley's personal interests to avoid ND and schedule a easy win like Louisiana. It's playoffs or bust for them this year. Cancelling the ND game could be the difference between him getting fired or not.
