A kid that I coached/metored signed w/ a D-1 FBS University that I'd rather not name at this time. He signed last February and then tore his ACL during wrestling season and received a greyshirt and stayed home this semester. He arrived on campus a few days ago and was informed he had a herniated disk in his neck and could require surgery. They won't sign off for him to play and he is concerned that he will lose his scholarship seeing as how he has now had 2 injuries that could prevent him from playing before he even stepped on the field. He is a very good student and academics are number one for him. I told him that they would most likely still honor his scholarship even if (God forbid) he isn't able to play again. Do you guys think they will honor it? I assumed they would but I'm just a little worried. He is also a very good FRIEND of mine and I don't want to give him bad advice. Any insight would be greatly appretiated. Thanks guys.

I'd imagine it'd depend on the school.
But I am not knowledgeable of these things...I know SEC teams would have no problem letting him go.

I believe worst case is that they switch him over to an academic scholarship. Not sure though. Best advice you could give is for him to be honest and upfront with the coach and medical staff. Even a full ride isn't worth trying to play through injuries if he could do further damage.

It's a Mountain West School. I'm hopeful that he will heal up and play again but I am a little worried. He had frequent stingers in high school.

I'll ask everyone to pray for him though. He's a very good person with top notch character. His future will be bright football or not. I just hope he wont get discouraged.

Most schools will honor the scholarship, however since they are 1 year contracts there is the possibility that they won't. My suggestion should he not be cleared to play is that he get in the pocket of his position coach or his head coach and let them know he is willing to do anything from team manager to other odds and ends to keep the scholarship. Best of luck to your friend.
