How does Kelly motivate the team after the loss?

I'm supposed to be studying for an exam, but all I've been thinking about all day is this weekend's game and how deflated the players must feel. All they've talked about for months was winning and going after a BCS bowl game and they come out in week one and self-destruct. That must be absolutely demoralizing.

If we come out flat against Michigan I'll be heartbroken. I'm a medical student in Ann Arbor and my classmates are going to have a field day if we lose. I've dealt with enough smirks already today.

What does Kelly say to them after a loss like that to get them ready for Michigan? How does he get the wind back in their sails? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

He could make a statement move by sitting Reddick or Jone and bringing another young guy in to that position. That probably won't happen but if people start getting benched then they might start playing better.

By Kelly standing on a booster chair and getting on the loudspeaker and yelling and screaming obscenities at the players until they are immune to it. Sorry had to say that just kidding. He does remind me of the dorf on golf.

I would walk into the locker room, scan the room and look every player in the eye. I would stand there for about 20 seconds (would feel like an hour). I would then tell the players that it is the coaching staff's responsibility to prepare the team to win. I would say that the staff worked their asses off to make that happen each week.
I would then that come Saturdays, the staff can only make minor adjustments. It is the players' responsibility to make it happen. I would say that coaches cannot make players concentrate, cannot make players want to win.
I would finish by saying that I will be putting in the players who can focus and have the desire to win. I'd say we will watch you all at practice this week. If you want to win, you're in. If not, you're out.
Stand there scannint the room for another twenty seconds and say see you on the field.

I would think the players would be bummed, but everyone that has posted on twitter seems positive.

Also Big Lou posted a speech Rocket said at the Utah pep rally last year called Unbelief and some players have quoted that.

Make these boys run. Make these boys work. Make these boys Men. Make these men winners. Make these men get the job done.

I'm not talking about expectations. I'm not talking about rankings. I'm not talking about ESPN, or GameDay, and I sure as hell ain't talking about Erin Andrews or Mel Kiper or any kind of "super conference".

I'm talking about focus. I'm talking about doing your job. I'm talking about execution. I'm talking about winning football games. I'm talking about PLAYING LIKE A CHAMPION

If BK needs to motivate players after a game like we just played and headed into Michigan week, we are in for a long season.

Actually, when you have high hopes for yourself and your goals take a huge hit one week into the year, you do need to be motivated again. Ask VaTech about week 2 last year after they lost to Boise State.

I was at the Utah pep rally last year and recall Rockets speech. Basically said something along the lines of their is an imposter or a thief or something among us in South Bend...unbelief. Not his best speech, but I would imagine it would be impossible to be a ND football player and not get pumped up and motivated by Rockets love and passion for ND football and his desire to see this team return to glory. He is a special guy.

That being said, I dont think Kelly is going to have to say much. These guys understand they have a long season ahead of them and there is plenty of time to make this a successful season. Most of these upperclassmen have been through the darkest days of Notre Dame football, and have one year minus one game left to leave behind their legacy as the turning point in ND football. Guys like Harrison Smith, Manti, and Braxton Cave will not let this team fold. If nothing else, they proved last year and even this past Saturday that they are resilient and will fight for their lives until the final whistle of every game. They may have lacked focus, but at no point in the game did they lack effort or intensity.

Haha I'm not worried about how motivated this team is. If this team isn't motivated by how sh*tty they looked last week against USF, nothing will motivate them.

I'm more worried about how Brian Kelly corrects the turnover problems. I hope he runs this team into the ground during practice this week and has ESPN running nonstop in the locker room so the players know just how sloppy they were last week.

It would not be fun to be a member of that football team this week.

This team does not need motivation, all they need is to hear that Tommy Rees will be starting and that will be motiivation enough!

I would like to mention that i was almost TARRED & FEATHERED on this site a couple months back by daring to make the point that the near unanimous annointment of dayne crist despite his glaring weaknesses and iffy record--and the annoying diminishment of tommy rees's accomplishments as a freshman was not totally fair.

I quoted statisics that showed rees had done better cold off the bench as a frosh---that rees won the first game against a ranked opponent in several years--the first win against USC in 10 years--only the second bowl win in 15 years--- all from a talented freshman that was called NOTHING--simply a game manager with no upside--and an array of pegoratives that aimed to make me sound like i was NUTS for trying to make the case for REES.

When faced with all the raves about Daynes physical superiority and Tommy cripling limitations--i countered with arguments about Tommy's fantastic quick release --his better pocket movement---his superior accuracy---and his cool calm demeanor that raised the level of play for the whole team,

Those arguments were dismissed as BONEHEADED and BLIND to daynes obvious superiority---i did my best to simply make the point that my opinion rees was better and should start after leading us to the last 4 wins, For the most part all i got was hostility for my honest efforts to defend rees from the---he was just lucky--he's just a manager---he can't throw deep--blah blah blah!

Given it was a three page argument i'm sure many of you remember it.

I certainly remember it---- and i am more then willing to accept apologies--thanx

I hope Kelly simply challenges the team to put last week behind them and step up and play like they know they can play.

The team has to be down after a loss opening game, but hopefully kelly and the team come out with a chip on their shoulder and take care of business.

I fully agree with above comments after a disheartening game like against USF it should not take much to "light the fire" under the players. I am still confident and remain a true believer that mistakes will be corrected and trying to be an optimist here but it is better to make them early in the season and grow as a team from there

and ummmm yes Rees has got to be the obvious guy the BK builds this season around, DC I would hope will understand and offer mentorship and support in any way possible and if need be, he would provide a experienced back-up to help when/if needed
