What do you think the NCAA should do?

We have all read a million ideas about what the NCAA should do with cheating programs and whether or not NCAA football players should be paid. Some for and some against. What do you think is the best way to help settle these situations? Obviously, a small step can go a long way. I am wondering your opinion on how schools should be punished if guilty and also, what can the NCAA do to help the college football player survive money wise.

My take:

Punishments: I think NCAA should drop the bomb every time a school is busted. Set up a guideline for the infraction. Do this this and this ... you get this. Do that that and that you will get that.
USC ... to me would have been bowl banned for 3 years, lost half schollies for 4 years and if in appeal process you still suffer. Guilty until proven innocent. tOSU .... you lied. Okay, we, NCAA, hereby sentence you to 2 year bowl ban and lose half your scholarships for 2 years. No more handouts for each payer. Team game equals team trophy. No pants ...

Players found guilty once lose the season and that eligibility for severe infractions. Twice, your out of college sports period in the NCAA. Go NAIA where money isn't an option. If so, well, you are lucky to be found by some random rich guy that wants to pay you to play ball in a place like Marshall, MO... GO VIKES!!!

Paid players: I do actually believe in a small stipend. This my friends is still something I don't understand enough to make a logical guess on I would say?!? Not sure how I would word that ... I have a best friend that was a VBALL player at MO STATE ... great athlete. She was offered with her full ride and a $600/month "living expense if she moved from the dorms." . Do all NCAA athletes get that? All the other girls I really were able to know were not all on full rides and what not so it was hard to gage who got what. Anyway ... I don't feel I know enough about what and what is not offered in a scholarship for an athlete by each school. This is the one I want to know what you guys really think. Simply for the fact that several of you have played big time ball (or stick) and several have not.

Of course the NCAA would set up a staircase system for the level of authority used in each case. General guidelines. Guy at Miami of Ohio, lets say, gets approached by a buddy that literally has a beat up '91 Dynasty he is just sitting on and says, "Why don't you just take my beat *** Dynasty? You don't have a ride and I have an extra. You need to buy a battery and get it to pass inspection but shouldn't be more than a few hundy to get her rolling. I won't charge you for it. You need to get your sister to and from school as well as yourself." That athlete says thanks but no thanks because I could lose a season of playing because some other guy may get the same offer at USC but for a Caddy. Got it. thats what rules are for. With some sort of a small stipend the Miami of Ohio kid can maybe pay a bit of gas to hitch a ride and not be drowned. I would be more than happy to help a buddy get him or his sister to and from if they fall on hard times because he doesn't have time to work with raising a sibling while also trying to combine an education with working. After a while though a tank of gas would be appreciated. Thats me though.

Sorry for the stretch post but what is your take?

DISCLAIMER: Really hate doing this but if a thread of this caliber has been started covering both issues please delete me as a poster. I clearly can't navigate the site. I do also hate the hijacking of other threads when they get a general post that is like a fork in the road. One response takes the thread here and the other is taking it there. Sorry guys if this is a repeat but in the end .... I ALSO HATE USC!!! Meow?...

One word I have learned from this site and one or two others is ...

ZING!

Everyone is a critic. You asked a question and provided your thoughts on possible solutions. It is late here in Cali and I'm sure others will consider your question and provide some intelligent thoughts.

For now, umm...chuckle... why would someone offer a lady v-ball player 600 to move out of the dorm? Maybe I misunderstand the concept.

Good post..

No Dewey, you are correct. Why? That is what blows my mind sometimes. Yes, 600 a month for a vball player is ridic. (I will say to rep my UNIV. We were the 2nd school ever to hit 1K wins as a program ever next to UCLA) I do understand that 180k in bulk is a lot more tempting but **** ... I would hope more kids would have heads well placed on ones shoulders to take 600 a month over 180k in bulk.

Your not off Dew ... it was a big reason why I said I don't think I can make an educated opinion on the situation strictly for the fact that I was thrown so far off by this that I am still ignorant to the legal pay of athletes at the NCAA Div. 1 level.

Also what you consider late is even later here ... Its a mind Fvck and I wish you all to just explain your take. We will, I think, quickly see a different opinion from post to post. Yet also see very good points from both sides, if not more sides.

EDIT: I try to admit what I do and do not know. What I love about this board is with every post, people have a smart *** response. If you don't see that coming a time or two .... DO NOT POST. I on the other hand can deal with it and pick and choose between them the great and intelligent insight you folks have to offer.

You are asking, it seems, a many dollar question.

I tend to lean on the side that many students have college paid for by legal donors.

Philanthropists.? Tax incentives?... I have ZERO clue...Then there is the concept of altruism...

Your point is solid. Could be a topic worthy of dissertation. LA Dodgers just got their team swiped from the extravagant owners going through divorce. Unfortunately Bush's buddy is now in charge.

Oops. I digress. I HAVE NO CLUE.

i think op has a point here.

nobody knows what the ncaa is going to do, including coaches and players, so they roll the dice, if the ncaa finds out well they could get slammed ala u$c or they could get a pass ala auburn.

I believe the NCAA needs to have a consistent approach. you cheat you get the hammer. period.

player sells his gold pants(for drugs, lets not kid ourselves) you get the hammer.

player gets money from wannabe agents, you get the hammer.

coach lies about commiting infractions, you get the hammer.

drop the secondary or minor infraction titles, if you're cheating in any way shape or form you get dealt hard. and i guarantee you will think twice about cheating again.

i know it cant be this easy but there has got to be better checks and balances put in place for this.

i dont want to delve into the paying players stuff.

I read an article somewhat recently about the effects of the SMU "death penalty" and why maybe NCAA won't want to do that again. I'll be darned if I can find it, nor do I remember why I read it in the first place. Maybe because of the OSU and Auburn issues. Anywhat, here is a different article I glanced at. (By the by, just type in SMU death penalty and you will get several results and thinks...)

SMU Mustangs

"The effects of the death penalty on SMU were felt for many years to come. In addition to it having a hand in destroying the Southwest Conference..."

Pony Excess? Was what SMU did all that wrong? | SportsJustice | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

This second article kinda sorta sounds like an SMU sympathizer. By the way, I equated those SMU teams with Miami, and I must say I can't stand Craig James. Seemed liked poetic justice that his son and another shady program and coach made headlines recently. The Southwest Conference is still alive and dirty.
