Zone Defense - MAKES ME PUKE!!!!

I know that coaches must employ zone defense at certain times, but I absolutely despise the entire concept. As I sit here re-watching yesterdays game, I watch WR's run wide open because there are always big open seems in a ANY zone defense. When you have three CB's like Blanton, Walls and Gray we should be playing much more man coverage.

I would be much more willing to see our guys line up face on face and say, "go ahead and try to beat me". With the talent at yesterday's game, I firmly believe that the WMU receivers would not have been able to beat us on most plays. In fact, watching the second half you will see our CB's man up on their WR's and they could not break free.

Nothing gives a O more confidence than being able to find those WR's sitting in the seems of a D. I am glad that the coaches went more man in the second half.

I saw the same thing you did with the zone yesterday. It didn't help that our players seemed to struggle with when to pass guys off/pick them up and what to do if 2 guys were in their zone. You could have driven a truck through some of the holes in our coverage. The backers in particular had trouble with coverage.

Can't wait for Nov 20th when the Gators play Appalachian State.

3-4 D has base responsibilities, and other responsibilities depending on the call. Backers did a nice job. They shut down the Broncos in the second half with their hook ZONE coverage didn't they?

I'm a fan of zone packages, especially when certain blitz looks are in. Holes will always be present with the right routes and by chance play calls. Quick crossing routes, quick slants, etc. tear up man coverage often. However these routes are covered, for a short portion of time, in zone looks. The key is to get to the passer before these routes are read and an opening anticipated.

This is part of defense. Pro, highschools, and even my pee wee football team employs zone looks. I'm a fan. No one stunk it up (AKA: I Hate Man Coverage [topic]) when we were getting blasted by man coverage... Now combine that with bump and run and big plays are given up with legit receivers. However bump and run destroys little quick crossing routes and slants, and with the right corner can potentially shut down a receiver all game.

Defense in football is a chess game. If you control the middle of the field, most often, you'll win. Your best bet as a defense is to keep the offense guessing. That being said, maybe the Irish were employing a new look defense (I haven't broke apart game film) in the zone to get repetitions in against an offense in which they felt confident? My vote is this: De. Co., mix it up baby! Diaco baby!

Yes, it was nice for the Gators, Wolverines, and Buckeyes to have lost. Although, I was really hoping the Wolverines would be better once they had beaten us. Oh well. It's bittersweet for the Meat Chicken I guess. Boo USC. Screw Uta(h)rded. Let's beat them all on the way out...

There is no better defense in thw world then a zone defense with a great pass rush.

Too many things can go wrong with man coverage. Even with a great pass rush.

Zone keeps the DB's facing the QB. Man forces DBs to trun and run. Once you have a DB with his back to the QB, all throws are in place!!

I only harp on the 5-2 so much (I guess it is now called the 3-4) because that is the D that I most studied, played, and coached. And frikken analyzed film so much that I grew warts on my eyelids, and still don't KNOW poop about it...So I gave it all up for floral design and full time girl scout cookie marketing in underprivileged neighborhoods. Business is kinda slow...

I kind of agree, depending on what you are talking about, with your assessment about some confusion when two enter a zone. I'm not sure what you are talking about, but I have noticed a lack of communication between Manti and Carlo when receivers cross underneath and leave either backer's zone (on the plays when they both drop to hooks and crossing routes occur). Maybe they need a "You!" call or something, but that is something that will come with time and with more base D calls.

Yeah, and that's when I quit watching the game as a "fan" and attempted to watch with a critical eye. I seemed to notice that many times only one backer was covering middle, and other backers were otherwise occupied. It seemed like in the second half, they went back to basic D, with 2 backers covering hooks. 3 and out happened often in the 2nd half as a result. The "under" was taken away, and Bronco QB had to actually find someone. He couldn't do it.
