Highs:
Where did THIS running game come from?
I still don't think we have any one "stud" tailback, but the combo of Allen and Wood appears to be at least respectable, suddenly.
Where did THIS defense come from?
Again, not a great looking defense, but for the first time in a few years they looked competent. They at least have the potential for coming up with a 3 and out, when we really need one. Gary Gray had a phenomenal 1st quarter, in run support. I was beginning to wonder if he wasn't assigned to hang out at the line and support the run. He was everywhere, in the first quarter.
Dayne Crist looks like a decent QB.
Purdue isn't exactly a great defense, but Crist's accuracy was very good. He did miss Floyd in the end zone once, but a pretty good day for him, overall.
Lows:
Can we please find an outside linebacker who can cover a receiver in the flat?
Purdue burned us all day long on these little dink and dunks. If this doesn't get fixed, then I'll bet we see teams using it against us, over and over again, all season long.
We still need to mount a more consistent pass rush.
Purdue had too much time to throw the ball, way too often. Which is, also, a testament to how well the secondary covered.
All in all, I was pleased with the product that I saw on the field. At least, pleased for a first game. Hopefully, the team will address the issues, and continue to improve. The next couple of games will tell us alot more about what we have.
