Brian Kelly wasn’t going to change, at least not in terms of how he was going to approach his new group of players at Notre Dame.
He was going to yell, encourage, scream, cajole and holler at his players to be the best they could be on the field. That’s what helped get him to Notre Dame; that’s what would help keep him at Notre Dame.
But he also realized that if he was going to strongly encourage them to be the best they could be, he would have to be better - physically - himself.
So he hired a personal trainer, changed his eating habits, and set the example off the field for the players to follow.
“Admittedly, it’s hard sometimes to talk about tempo and pushing it and being in great shape if the head coach looks like I was starting to look like,” said Kelly, who wouldn’t reveal how much weight he lost, but did admit to dropping a few pants sizes.
