I asked this question in another thread, but didn't get a reply. So Ill ask now.
I am a die-hard ND fan, been so for about 26 years. But, I do not know much about conferences, and the leverage ND has when it comes to negotiations.
My question is would ND have any leverage in negotiating with the Big 10 the terms of there contract to keep some of the tradition and appeal the program has attained over the years that makes them so sought after?
For example; as a independent ND can play whom they want, when they want, where they want. They are Notre Dame because of their national presence. Notre Dame is such a successful, and lucrative business because of their freedom. If the Big 10 wants Notre Dame because its a cash cow, and the revenue would be ridiculous, why would they strip ND of what makes it a national icon? It would be a bad business decision.
If they sign with the Big 10, I think they [big 10] would not only allow, but push ND to play one or two neutral site conference games against Penn St, Ohio State, Michigan..etc all over the country. A ND vs tOSU, whom are both ranked in the top 10, game played in the heart of SEC country would do wonders for the Big Ten's ratings..etc making them the premier conference.
Games like that, plus the OOC against SC, BC, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas..etc would be incredible. May even help ND with recruiting because they'd be the driving force behind the nations top conference.
If ND does go to the Big Ten as a business it would only make sense for Delaney to allow ND to be as close as the traditional ND to preserve the sole reason of what makes ND so profitable. Why would he want to destroy that?It would only hurt it's business venture. In the long run..ND would make the big ten more powerful, wealthier, and an apex conference doing what Notre Dame has always done.
Just some thoughts. Anyone have any insight?
