ND lost to Loyola Marymount last night. LM is now 4-7...

Will it soon be time for Missy Conboy - who I believe will be the interem AD for most of 2010 - to make a bold move and put a new BB coach in place for '10-'11 season.

And what about Butler's Stevens?

I love Mike Brey but hes not a very good coach. He's average at best. I like the guy and I like how he represent the university, but I think it may be time for a change with him as well. He lives by the 3 and dies by the 3 and his teams NEVER EVER EVER EVER play ANY kind of defense what so ever.

Yes... I want him.

BTW... I love Mike... great guy... love talking to him and hearing him talk.... he's not Coach K... can't run a wide open offense with a weaker D like K and win.... not with his talent at ND.

I think its time for a change, Brey has been a mediocre to below average coach during his time here

Stevens knows the potential for the 10-11 team and he will stay for one last hurrah until Howard graduates.

I like Brey, but as a KU and ND fan watching both teams there is one very apparent difference.......Defense!!! Bill Self's teams play it, and Brey's ND teams don't......O.K., O.K., there are two, KU is way more talented, but it doesn't matter how talented they are, if they don't play D, they don't play for Self....That mentality is missing at ND, and it could help make up for slightly lesser talent.

I love Big East basketball. I am a die hard UCONN basketball fan and do not route at all for ND basketball. Weird because I love ND football. ND is such a tough opponent at home. Harrongody is a beast. I think Brey is a good coach. I hate when UCONN has to play them. If ND was in any other conference in the country they would qualify year in and year out for the NCAA tournament. He does it with athletes who will never be one-and-done/two-and-done type of payers. ND has different recruiting standards but yet he still recruited 3 parade all americans in Chris Thomas, Torin Francis, and Chris Zeller showing that he has a decent ability to competitively recruit in-state. I feel that he gets the most out of his players and he is intense. I agree they shouldnt have lost to Loyola but teams struggle early on. If its change your looking for just to switch things up, then i cant argue. But if youre going to talk results then you have look at what he's done where he is a 2 time back-to-back Big East Coach of the year, 5 NCAA tournament appearances, 21-15last season and missed the tournament (which is insane), undefeated 2 straight seasons at home among others. So i think he should stay.

THAT BEING SAID---

Stevens has had one of the fastest starts in D-1 history with regards to wins. He learned under 2 good head coaches in Matta and Lickliter. I'm not stating anything you already dont know, but i think he will be such a hot, trendy name that he would wind up at a school where basketball is a higher priority than its priority at ND. Bt then i think 'well it is in the best conference in basketball maybe he'd take on the challenge.' If i have a chance to coach at ND, then I may as well just stay at Butler and succeed year in and year out. The risk-reward on his career is too much to roll the dice with a basketball program that has to recruit on higher standards. But thats just me. But if they did fire Brey, then he is a great choice especailly for how young he is. So in other words, I agree they SHOULD look at him if they booted Brey. If i were Stevens, I WOULD NOT go. haha.

I'm pretty sure this name wont be brought up if ND were to look for a new coach but there is a coach at Ryder University In New Jersey which is about 20 minutes from where i live. his name is Tommy Dempsey. He is an Irish-Catholic from Scranton, PA. Has been successful at all stops. Hasnt reached the NCAA Tournament yet but one of his players, Jason Thompson, went 12th in NBA draft. He won the MAAC once in 3 years. He's also young and somehow gets a few good players to come to a mostly bland campus. He still has a lot to prove, but I wouldnt knock ND basketball if they ever wanted to gamble on a young coach. There are ton of other coaches, just throwing this out there.

Dont mean to nitpick it was Luke Zeller, not Chris. Also Torin Francis was not in state, he was from Massachusetts and he was a bust. No player development at all. Also 21-15 in no way constitutes an NCAA tournament team. It would have been insane to even be considered last year.

Geez, im suprised you didnt correct my intial spelling of Harangody, too. haha.

Regardless of wether Francis was a bust, Brey was still was capable to getting a touted name to the University. I knew it was Luke, just mis-typed because of the first Chris, when talking of the 3 players- i was only referring to the 2 Mr. Indiana's with regards to instate recruiting, but i guess I'll just add Harangody as another in-state recruit. and 21-15 in the Big East is a decent season and they were on the bubble because of the strength of conference. Granted i think they were 8-10 in conference play. I dont care what coach you are, you're team will run out of gas during a stretch when you have to play at No. 20 Louisville at No. 8 Syracuse, No. 3 Connecticut, No. 8 Marquette, at No. 3 Pittsburgh, at Cincinnati and at No. 12 UCLA all in a row. 7 straight losses. Somehow they then managed to beat No. 7 Louisville the very next game. In my opinion, When top tier Big East teams meet, its almost seems like a coin toss on who will win. They werent too deep last year, if i recall correctly.

His only All Americans were Troy Murphy (after all he did become an all american under Brey) and Luke Harangody. The players in the NBA are Murphy, Chris Quinn, Matt Carroll, and Rob Kurz. Russel Carter was good. Chris Thomas was good. Harangody has improved each season.

I think with what he has (and is forced) to work with he has done very well. Would I be happy if he were the next UCONN coach, i dont know. But i think he is a good fit for ND because he takes the 3 star athletes, develops them, (Harangody was one of them) and comptetes year in and year out.

Notre dames record in the 10 years before Brey 128-139. In his 9 years they are 188-101.

ND has a bucketball team? Shit. Next thing you know, they will have woman's soccer. They will probably wear shirts that say "Lady Irish." As if we didn't notice the boobies.

Maybe they will learn the concept of "defense."

Thats the problem He doesnt develop players and relies on his top players too heavily. For every guy who consistently gets better (Harangody, Quinn, Carter) There are guys who played worse throughout their career (Thomas, Francis) Both of those guys had their best years as freshman. Dont get me wrong, I like Brey and I think he is a good coach. If I were satisfied with making the tournament on average every other year then I would want him here for the duration or his career. But if I want more, I just get the feeling more and more that he isnt the guy.

Wait a second. There are girls at ND!?? I haven't been too impressed with Brey the past few seasons either.

I cant argue if its your desire to for change. Sometimes change is necessary to go in a different direction. Regardless of who the coach is, i dont think ND will ever win a National Championship. They just dont get that caliber player. just like butler, they arent ever going to win a national championship. They'll hang in the top 20, make some noise in the tourney, maybe slide into a final 4 somehow. but in the end, the top athletes and players win. I dont think the fans at Gonzaga are clamoring for a new coach. he is in the touney year in and year out. Sends a couple players to the pros here and there. Do you think he should be fired? I dont. I didnt really look at the players you mentioned stats. maybe ill check it out later. I guess its just a matter of differing opinions. I have no expectations or vested emotion into ND basketball so maybe thats why.
