Official University Release: Coach Weis Will Not Be Retained

Brian Hanley of The Score/ Sun Times in Chicago is headed to South Bend for a press conference today. He has been told that Weis will be relieved of head coaching duties at Notre Dame and has known this since mid week.

Weis has already been phoned by 6 NFL teams seeking offensive coordinators and Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick has allowed Charlie Weis to field and entertain these offers.

Notre Dame will not seek Urban Meyer, privately he has indicated he will not be leaving Florida. They will, however, go after Bob Stoops, also privately, to gauge interest but are prepared to offer the position to Cincinatti's Brian Kelly quickly to skirt any fallout if Bob Stoops will not interview.

I wasnt aware that it was reported. I dont think this is really anything unexpected but I wasnt aware of 2 things.

1. He knew as of mid week - before the holiday apparently.

2. He was already fielding calls from NFL GM's.

If Swarbrick goes no further than Brian Kelly without expanding their interview process to find the right candidate rather than the hot candidate we would be better off with another year of Weis.

I dont want Brian Kelly, unless he has the best resume and interview among the candidates interviewed for this job.

Let's make it even more difficult for our mediocre defense to keep the opposition from scoring when they only have to move the ball 50-60 yds. KICK the damn ball 5 yds deep into the end zone! IF, Stoops and Kelly both turn down ND...then who is a legitimate candidate?

ND deserves the best! Especially right now. The only thing ND is missing is an experienced and "proven" head coach.

and as far as the search...IMHO, ND has a short list and the next one is probably within days of taking the job.

What makes you believe Brian Kelly is any different from Charlie Weis? Kelly is the hot candidate right now in college football, nothing more. Hes found success with Dantonio's players, hasn't recruited well and has lost some top recruits recently, and has an average defense.

Every candidate after the 2 marquee names in this search has positives and negatives. If we are going to give Kelly the job without conducting extensive interviews to find the right coach for this program, then we are better off keeping Charlie. We're paying this man $18 Million to leave, there better be the right coach replacing him, not just the hot candidate in college football.

Swarbrick needs to earn his money and conduct at least 15-20 interviews if Stoops turns us down, 1 interview each day starting after the announcement of Weis' termination. If they can't find the right guy in that batch, then interview some more.

Mendenhall is a devout Mormon, that wont happen. I am 100% sure if he were to interview here it would cause both sides at BYU and at Notre Dame to be disturbed by it.

Peterson deserves an interview, I dont think hes received a BCS job interview yet due to how poorly BSU coaches translate to BCS programs.

Let me begin by stating that I never mentioned Brian Kelly or any of his success. I just don't care for Charlie Weis and I never have, he's a pro O coordinator NOT a head coach.
18 million is nothing to ND. Better coaches with better records than CW were paid off, how is he any better?

If they go no further than Kelly after no attempt to get Meyer and a Swoops rejection, its called "settling". And that should be the key indicator what the ND Administration thinks of ND Football.
