There is just something special

about this team. It goes a little deeper then heart, comradery, and skill.

They aren't the most talented team. They aren't the best coached team. They've got a lot of weak spots. They kind of defy common logic. Just looking at the box scores you would think that they are a average team, and would have no chance against SC or any other BCS caliber team.

Its like there is a magic about them. Something I have never seen before in any football team. A blessing of some sort. They are a symbol of that legendary Notre Dame mystique. Skeptics will say that they should be 1-4 or whatever and are lucky to be 4-1. I see it as the team is a inch away from being great. They have that swagger about them. Not like the arrogant swagger that you see at "the U" but the loving swagger that bond each of them to win as one. They love their coach and fight for him and each other. Logically, I expect them to lose. They are not there yet on a talent or schematic level. The coaching is not the best. There is just something deeper, almost divine. They will win October 17th. But it will not be for the fans, the school, or anything else besides each other and their coach.

No I agree... I think a ton of it has to come from all the disappointments of the past two years and these kids growing up together and facing adversity together. My favorite is the picture of Jimmy hugging Manti after the Washington game, basically passing the torch of leadership that will be his in a few years.

Okay, we didn't beat UM, however, it's been a damn fun year. Who wants to destroy Charleston Southern, beat up on Troy, get by a crappy Tennessee team that everyone said we would destroy, handle Kentucky - but in the process hear ESPN say that without our starting QB they might count us out for the National Championship - even though we think we have 30 4 and 5 star offense players as well as a National Championship starting 11 on defense - No, we pull them out at the last second but we walk out of the stadium saying "Damn, that was great!!!!!!!!!!!!"

they play for each other. and the identity of this team is growing with each week. i just hope that it's enough to get them in position to pound the condoms mercilessly.

I have to agree completely. While watching the end of that unbelievable game Saturday evening, I found myself thinking, "God, I f-ing HATE this!! Why can't we just blow teams out of the water?? Why can't we play the likes of Washington State or Charleston Southern more often?" And then I realized something - I watch the Irish play EVERY second of EVERY game of EVERY season, and have done so for the past two decades, and out of ALL of those games, which ones do I reall recall? Which ones do I rememeber nearly every snap, every play, every down? Which ones do I recall EXACTLY where I was when I was watching the game - the sights, the smells, the sounds - remember exactly what I was wearing, what the weather was like that day?? Just palpable, REAL, exciting, wonderful memories....and which games were those of??? They were, of course, the games that came down to the wire, the last minute drives, the amazing comebacks, the agonizing defeats, the intoxicating victories!! THOSE are the games we will all remember as we move along in our lives. Who cares what the polls say or by how many points we should have beaten so-and-so by....what matters most are the memories my friends. And THIS season, the Fighting Irish have already given us all a LIFETIME of those memories to carry with us forever....that is what makes being a Notre Dame fan so special.

Well said and followed upon. Great intial post as well. Strange are the emotions related to the game.

I know this seems really abstract, but I think football to men nowadays are like wars and battles to significant civilizations of the past. I'm certain Alexander the Great would have been an Irish fan. The man never knew defeat.

Hmmm. I have now figured out my first born son's name: Knute Alexander.

Or maybe Alexander Knute, or Alexander Rockne... Ah nevermind damn-it.

yeah, it's game like these (even though they give us heart attacks) that emphasize what being a college football fan is all about. the excitement, the pure effort and joy these boys put into the game (as opposed to just earning a pay check) and the pride they show for their school. awesome to witness in person.
