The topic was Charlie Weis. The "expert" talking about him said the same things that he we've been hearing since last season ended: he needs to put up this year or he'll get fired. Along with the usual points (we have experience, Tate and Floyd, etc.) there was also the usual litany of anti-Irish bullshit that comes with an ESPN broadcast. The "expert" called our schedule "a bunch of patsies" and mentioned that we might be able to "stay on the field" against USC for the first time since 2005.

It is painful to hear the re-hash about the "soft" slate. I happened to land on "College Football Live" the other morning (usually avoid Sports Center there days as I can't bear to hear any more Indians news) and they were going over the Big 10. In discussing Penn State, the talking head said their schedule was "favorable" to have another double digit win season. Given their non-conference games (which are shameful) I thought they would be the posterchild for "soft."

I can only surmise Paterno has pictures of Bermen with a goat...

espn- this is how I see them-short story- I played winter baseball in Puerto Rico years ago and our trainer doubled as a pro boxing trainer and trained the great boxer "Benitez" from PR, we were talking boxing and he got on the subject of Howard Cosel, he said Cosel knew nothing about boxing except repeating "buzz" word terms that made him sound like he was in the know, espn reminds me of that everytime I hear them (which hasnt been for about 6 mos), from the slurs about ND at the roast for Golic to Charlie's physical profile to how they are setting ND up this year on a story line if they win big or dont get it done, they are laughable in their approach and so predictable, apologies to Golic, Greenie, and a few other guys on their pro day stuff, how about a group of sports journalists who respect their subject, job and themselves enough to make it worth listening to, big boy football my @^$

I loathe ASSPN as much as the next guy, but in all fairness:

(1.) We do have a relatively easy schedule this year. Many Irish fans have even pointed to that very fact as one of many reasons to have high expectations this year.

(2.) The "talent but lack of experience" excuse is null and void now. This team is full of talented, experienced upperclassmen now.

(3.) Given (1) and (2,) this really should be a "put up or shut up" year for Weis.

I was just going to say the same thing Tim. The fact is that ND is UNPROVEN. So I have to say that this year is the year to bust out from the last 15 years. This year should include no less than a 10-2 season, and if ND loses to USC that its not by 40 points. This will then trigger a BCS bid and to top off the season either a victory in that game, or again a small margin of defeat.
I don't expect a NationalChampionship, would be nice but still a year or 2 away I think, but ND needs to be respectable in the tough games.

In the end, it means nothing if USC rolls ND again and gets rolled in a BCS or higher tiered Bowl game.

State Penn has the second easiest non-conference schedule in the country. How do you think Paterno racked up all those wins? He's been scheduling like that for years.

Thanks for the Welcome. I've been in Hudson for 10 years, but my Uncle has been here for decades and my cousins went to school here.

I can't be more ready for the season--are there tailgaters here? We go to one game every year--this year doing MSU and my Dad is going as well. He is a '56 grad and played QB and punter. Needless to say, I have been a huge fan for life. Sometimes I feel like a lone wolf in the land of O$U fans, but I love it!

ND opponents not patsies...

ND opponents not patsies...

There is bandwagon opinion, both on the boards and the
tv analysists, that ND's schedule is much softer this
year.

Lets eliminate tv rating dollars from these "expert's"
opinion. First, ND starters return with vastly more
game experience. Second, since the starting units are
essentially unchanged, you have more cohesive and ef-
fective groups.

These two factors will have a lot more to do with any
ND success vs "softer" scheduling. Alas, the subject-
ive opinion bandwagon will get the credit.

The real strength of schedule is measured by updated
power ratings. Totaling eleven eliminates bias and
improves accuracy. The post linked below compares
2008 to 2009 strength of schedule. Take it to the
bank...Tom
