Spring football is over and fall camp is 3 months away, so all the average ND football fanatic has to do is watch the recruiting sites. This year that might cause more gray hair and panic than every before. Why is this happening you ask. Because our usual fast start is not happening. If you just look at the commit numbers, you might be running for the edge of the cliff. BUT, I urge calm, patience and sanity prevail. Charlie knows what is going on and he has a plan. Plus, there are many factors in 2009, that we have not faced in CW's time at ND.

The major challenges we face are following:
1. Coach on Probation: As every person in America is aware, CW needs to win this season or he is out. That does not mean a 7-8 win season with a bid to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. This means 9+ wins, no lopsided losses and BCS. This situation results in the elite talent taking a wait and see mentality.
2. Two Weak Seasons: Whether CW stays or not, kids want to see that he can regain that magic that brought two BCS bids. Again, they will take a wait and see approach.
3. Depth/Talent: CW has always been able to sell the, "we need you NOW, you can play early" card. That does not work anymore. Take a look across our depth charts. We are two deep with young talent at every position.
SOLUTION: WIN!!! Sounds really simple and it is. If we come out this season and do what I expect, we will have a great recruiting class. I expect solid victories and BCS implications. A solid season will fill the cupboards with top choice meat.
So, do not panic by our slow start. We are more likely to have one of those USC or UF finishes. We will win and we will fill the roster with studs.

great post. the only real position where top prospects could be brought in still on the "come and you can play here now" might be DT. and that might even be a push, seeing that we have a good 3 already, but in our 4-3 sets or goal line sets, we need the big boys upfront. so i think we could still sell that.

We are not that far behind from last year at this time. I have posted this before but we had (4) guys before May 1st last year (3 4stars and 1 3star). This year we have (3) commits (2 4stars and a 5star). We picked up 7-8 more guys from May 1st until the season started last year. I think we will get at least 4-5 before the season starts and a lot more once we start winning games!

i doubt we'll get that many before the season starts...as you said...recruits really need to see some dominance on the field that equates to a lot of wins.

We need a winning streak with some big wins. Beat downs on teams that should be beat down and a win against the big time program on the schedule.

I think we will definately see an increase over the summer. As much as people say that CW is the big reason recruits come to ND, i dont think that is true.

Charlie is a good guy and doesnt sell the "come to ND because im the coach and always will be" to his recruits like Bowden or Paterno can do. He sells ND being ND. The 40 year decision. For that i really respect charlie when it comes to recruiting.

Not to say he isnt selling the staff he has, but the major selling point is the fact thats its ND, a ND education, a huge fan base, TV time, time to be seen, things to fall back on if football doesnt work.

Some Recruits will come no matter what. Its flipping Notre Dame!

Main reason for the slowdown...

Main reason for the slowdown...

Last year Weis led the charge for new recruits. He was
the first and fastest out of the gate. NCAA rules have
changed, the assistants now must pick up the pace. The
head coach is not allowed early visits as in the past.
