Ok Canuck. Always like your posts. But a high school basketball coach trying to tell a COLLEGE LINEMAN why a basketall scheme does or not compare to college offensive scheme is a
b i t of a s t r e t c h.

I'm friggen tellin you guys. Charlies offense has too many plays, "thinks" too fucking much, is focused solely on him and his relationship with QB, and running game is beyond stupidity and outdated.

Damn. I need a friggen beer. Friggen bball coach trying to tell football dudes stuff.... :)

don't listen to him Canuck. reindeer can't play sports so he's jealous.

Agree. Seems like Charlie is too high on Clausen much of the time, and the O-line didnt seem to know how to straight up come off the damn ball and drive a man 95% of the time. The pass blocking improved dramatically this season IMO, but the run blocking remained the same or even may have taken a step back.

And this one is more of just a personal opinion, but the rotation of the backs (3 of them) never really seemed to let any of them really get in a groove the past two seasons.

The idea of a speed back and a power back is ok, but i would much rather have an single elusive speed back who has good vision(something very necessary in Zone Blocking schemes). Allen has shown it sometimes, but nothing consistent enough to make him a great one, which may very well go right back to the O-lines blocking again.

What were we: ?bottom quarter ?bottom tenth in running the ball? ?bottom
It can't be that complicated if 100 college teams do it better that ND.
Suggestion: Are there any of Holtz's playbooks around?

One of the guys over at DD says Ron Prince has definitely joined the staff but his role/ title hasn't been determined yet.

My hope is OL coach because bringing anyone in with the title of OC is useless

I doubt he would take a job as OL coach. Too far of a step back from his previous job.

However if he becomes the OC (which is likely). Then he will ultimately be responsible for the OL play. And if Latina doesn't whip them into shape. Then Price will serve double duty.

Think of it like having 2 OL coaches. Latina stays and adds continuity. Price brings in a new set of eyes/expertise.

Charlie doesn't have to fire anyone, and doesn't have to risk defections from the current roster/recruiting classes.

Basically it's a win,win,win.

Actually, 2...

Phil Trautwein - 5th Year
Jason Watkins - 5th Year
Carl Johnson - Junior (RS Soph)
Michael and Maurkice Pouncey - True Soph

HOWEVER, I do agree that the system is too complex for college kids to learn and they need to simplify it a bit.

I'd mentioned it several times during the 2007 debacle.

It seemed like far too often guys on the OL would be looking at eachother after someone ran right between them. It's one thing to get beat by someone. It's completely different when someone blows through unblocked/unaccounted for.

Pass Blocking improved dramatically? It went from worst ever to one of the worst during the 2008 season. That isn't very dramatic to me. Pitt, BC, UNC, Navy, Syracuse, and USC were able to drop 8 back into coverage and rush 3 down lineman most of those games. Thats 3 guys getting through 5 and putting pressure on the QB. Maybe we can take another dramatic step in pass blocking and block 2 out of the 3 guys with 5.

Yes, the pass blocking improved dramatically. Absolutely. Did you watch the games? If you did, then you'd see that. Was it great? Of course not. Not even close. But the guy said they improved dramatically, and he's right. They pass the eyeball test AND the stats test. They were one of the worst in HISTORY last year, and this year they were 45th in NCAA. Ahead of teams like Alabama, North Carolina, Cal, Florida St, LSU, etc. That's dramatic improvement, any way you slice it.

Now, I'll agree with you, watching Pitt rush 3 guys and still get pressure on the QB is maddening. And the line still 1000 miles from being good IMO. But in the pass blocking sense, they did improve dramatically...

Pass Blocking is a lot different then rush blocking. Run blocking takes a lot of brute strength and heart!!! Pass blocking does too but our OL is lacking that Jeff Faine attitude. We need guys that are animals and not just going through the motions. A new OL coach with some passion would really lite a fire under these guys!!!

Pass blocking is all about leverage and having good hips and feet. All you do is prevent a move from Point A to Point B. All you have to do is cut them off for a few seconds. Run blocking requires the ability to physically move men off the line; using angles and double toeams to move people is the key here.

exactly so that goes back to needing a better strength coach and OL coach to teach better form!
