actually the kids can probably be a little more loose with charlie's presence up in the box.

I think you have something with the lack of Charlie's presence on the sideline.....

Seriously about Charlie in the press box. Other than old man Paterno and Lou with his broken neck, is there a precedent for a healthy coach coaching from the press box? Boy did it work, but I would think the administration might have a problem with it...

I think Charlie should stay in the box and call the plays as well........but it ain't gonna happen!

He got the HC job on the back of his coordinating in NE, thats his strength, but when was the last time you saw a HC not on the sideline, OK, yesterday was due to his knee, but as soon as he's healthy......

it's one game against a mediocre team....i wouldn't base our success based on the name plates and c'dub being in the press box.

i do like coordinators to be in the press box becuz they can see the entire field, and make better adjustments, imo.

i'm really interested in hearing who c'dub wants to hire as oc.

From an NBC.com article, "Later, when questioned if he’d consider calling plays from the press box permanently, Weis smiled and said: “It’s Christmas right? That’s the furthest thing from my mind. I just want to enjoy this with my wife and kid and get back to sunny South Bend.”

CW or MH?

CW or MH?

Come on guys...this is something I really haven't heard talked about on these forums. Question really is: Is the offense doing much better because CW is in the box or Mike Haywood is on the field?? Ever since CW took over the offense this season it looked anemic. Now for the bowl Haywood is back on the field and the offense puts up 49?? Coincidence I think not.

That's ridiculous. There were a ton of reasons we put up 49 points. Mike Haywood being on the field as opposed to being in the press box is way, waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy down on that list.

More important:

1. Floyd being back on the field. No more triple teaming GTate.

2. Tate not being triple-teamed. Now the nation got to see how good, no, great he is.

3. The team finally burning the cover 2 defense that everyone used against us by using the deep middle of the field to Kyle Rudolph. Teams had been doubling both Floyd and Tate the 2nd half of the year with safety help over the top, thus exposing the middle of the field. We finally exposed that.

4. When Hawaii adjusted and clogged the middle, thus leaving GTate with one-on-one coverage, we burned them over the top. Brilliant.

5. Clausen was on fire. Period.

6. Screen plays worked! Hawaii must be the stupidest team in the country, because ever since CW's first year, teams have taken away the screen that worked so beautifully under Brady and co. But the screen plays worked magically on Wedn.

7. ND exposed all of Hawaii's weaknesses, which is what good teams do. The game plan was perfect, which CW must be given credit for. He's sucked the 2nd half of the year, but CW and the coaches deserve a ton of credit for their work prior to the game.

8. Better athletes. Far better athletes. It felt like LSU vs. ND a few years back.

***Haywood being on the field might have helped in some way, but it wasn't the reason we played so well offensively. We were playing that well for a couple of games earlier in the season, and Haywood was up in the box calling plays. We played in inferior team, and we finally made adjustments to our offense...

Wait, are you for real? Let me say it for you really, really, slowly....... CW.....CALLED.....THE......PLAYS!!!

Now, what is it that I don't get? Haywood was calling the plays and our offense sucked vs. SDSU. Haywood was calling the plays and then we caught fire vs. NC, Mich, etc. Haywood was calling plays and our offense then started to suck again. CW took over and our offense still sputtered. It wasn't even who was calling the plays, it was the offensive scheme. That lies on CW's feet. But HE set up the gameplan, and HE was calling the plays, not Haywood.

Again, what is it that I don't get?

I guess you don't get his lack of understanding for what's really going on. There are numerous articles on the internet that clearly state that Charlie was calling and coaching the game from the press box. Charlie even comments on the advantage this gives a coach. The articles even flashback to his days as an OC w/ NE and asks him to compare calling plays from a box vs the field. Reading is fundamental.

I'm confused? (not much of a shock?)

Haywood was (has been) our O'co, now does that mean......

1) he set the game plan, cut film etc etc, and called the plays?

2) he set the game plan, cut film etc etc, but Charlie called the plays?

3) Charlie set the game plan, cut film etc etc, and called the plays? (why have Haywood?)

4) Charlie set the game plan, cut film etc etc, and Haywood called the plays?

5) None of the above, and Jimmy made all the plays up in the huddle?

i don't think we'll ever know the extent of charlie's hand in the playcalling for '08. i'm sure haywood didn't have free reign but how much of the bus was he actually driving?

I think the most important factor in the offensive explosion against Hawaii was the return of Michael Floyd to the lineup. Having said that, I don't think it was necessarily Michael Floyd, himself, but a second home run threat at WR. If you look at the season: As Floyd started to come along, the offense kept getting better. Then, once he got hurt, the offense kind of sputtered. Nothing against Floyd, but I don't think he is exactly "Larry Fitzgerald - esque", but I do think he is an outstanding receiver. And I think I learned, this season, that ND needs TWO outstanding receivers, to make their offense go. But that still brings us back to the original problem. One that I have been harping on, since the Blue-Gold game: We cannot run the ball. Until we fix that, we are not going to be able to compete with the big boys. We need a running game that can work on it's own, regardless of how well the passing game is going. We can't continue on with this "we can run effectively, when the passing game is clicking." I'm not saying that we can't come out slinging it, to make the running game more effective. But we have to be able to run the ball, whether the passing game is succeeding or not.

I hear what you are saying, but....................

misdirection only works when you can already run the ball. A defense that knows your running game is pretty ineffective will not overpursue, which is the whole purpose for the misdirection in the first place.
