I was watching once the game was over, and was i the only one to notice that Clausen didnt seem to react very well to being around the other guys on the team. Many just seemed to ignore him IMO. I still, even after this game, have great concerns about our football team. Im hoping Weis ALLOWS Crist to compete with Jimmy for the starting job next year and in the spring. We played a sub-par defense, and still had trouble at times running the ball. I dont mean to be negative, but i seen many of the same mistakes that made our team 7-6 instead of a 9 or 10 win team. screen, screen, screen...what the hell is that? still didnt deliver the nail in the coffin. im concerned, and think that if hawaii would have changed QBs earlier, they may have had a better shot. any comments?

yes Hawaii's backup qb moved the ball on a soft zone 2nd string defense, and to me I saw Jimmy laughing and high fiving eveyone on the sideline and being totally in the game. Its Jimmys job to lose.

We had multiple 5+ even 10+ plays on the ground. Its pretty easy to stop the run when your up big and the other team knows your going to run.

Wow, I saw the EXACT opposite throughout the entire game. He was joking with all of the players, teammates both black and white, and there wasn't any animosity that i could see. In fact, I was thinking to myself that people watching the game will finally stop saying the bullshit rumor that JC doesn't get along with his teammates. Just read the B&G practice reports; he's always clowning with teammates. And they voted him a team captain as only a sophomore. And they reacted quite happily when he was throwing TD's all over the place.

Sorry, but I just don't see it at all. No story here...

I'm currently a student at Notre Dame, and I understand why you are concerned. I've seen Clausen at parties standing in the corner with a kind of dumb look on his face waiting for people to come up to him and tell him how great he is (and too often, people do). I have classes with football players and I once asked Rudolph what he thought of Clausen. He said something along the lines of "I know some guys don't care for him too much but personally like him". That was a few weeks into the year.

HOWEVER, I think this week was sort of a breakout week in leadership for Clausen. As opposed to earlier in the year when he would just sit on the bench and let the fan blow his girly hair around, today he was standing on the sideline involved in the game even when the defense was on the field. He was moving around, interacting with other players, having a good time. Not to mention that clip ESPN kept showing of him on that wavepool thing with all the players watching and laughing. Also, if you check out this clip of the pre-bowl banquet, you see Clausen standing up with the team leaders showing some emotion with the crank me up chant:

Notre Dame vs. Hawaii has happened---in a fun sort of way

Certainly no Tebow yet, but I think he's starting to get that the quarterback position at Notre Dame is more than simply lobbing the ball up for Golden or Floyd. You're right -- hopefully Weis fosters a little competition and I think he will to some extent.

As for your other points -- I'm not sure I would call our defensive performance "sub-par". Those 3rd and long conversions infuriate me just as much as anyone else and I will never understand why they give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 8, but I think they played pretty well. And it doubly pisses me off how they go into a sort of prevent defense type mode where they give the free 8 yard passes all the way down the field. You've held them to 7 points playing tight coverage!!! why stop? I don't really count that last TD against the 2nd stringers.

And I agree with the above poster about the end of game rushing. Jonas was doing pretty well considering the defense knew exactly what was happening. If we kept Clausen in and kept winging the ball around we might have hit 60, but at this point -- with BCS rankings/style points and all not coming into play -- there was nothing to gain leaving our starters in the whole game and running up the score. We'd be better served to get some others--who we'll need next year--some more live game experience.

Yeah, I'm with you. I thought that Clausen's relationship with his teammates was the best I have seen.

NDLA, I think this rumor comes from the perception Jimmy gave off when he first arrived on campus. He had a definitive arrogance about him. But I mean, how can you blame him when he's being touted as the best quarterback prospect in a decade? My buddies at Ohio State are telling me stories about Terrelle Pryor's arrogance that remind me of Clausen's early days in South Bound. So I think this is where this "bullshit rumor" has its roots. Thankfully, Clausen has calmed down in this regard and I'm sure last year's continuous beatdown helped humble him a lot.

Part of the problem with Clausen's perception also might stem from comparisons to Brady. I mean, people used to leave jerseys, pictures, balls, etc. outside Brady's room in Dillon Hall (as opposed to Clausen's off-campus house) for him to sign and he always took them in, signed them, and left them back outside his room. Brady was the best of both worlds -- performed on the field and as humble as one could reasonably expect off it. But people are usually willing to excuse the latter if the former is true (Samardzija).

very happy with everything today except some piss poor tackling by defensive backs. no reason to complain about anything that clausen did today. he was very into it with his teammates as well. he played to the cameras a little more than i would have liked but he performed very well.

i have concerns because this hawaii team looked like the washington team we dismantled, i hope that this win is quickly put in its place and its back to work for the off season for everyone, if any of these guys come off this year thinking they are better than they are it will spell problems... coaching staff included! there is a shit ton of work to be done in the offseason and everybody better do their part or they will end up sitting on the bench, clausen included.

Hawaii is better than Washington. They won games and were in a bowl. AT HOME! Clausen looked great. He looked like a leader in the making. Sometimes losing gets a team divided but winning again make the bonds strong. Leadership is something that grows with maturity sometimes. I think Golden Tate may be the leader also. He is good.

Let's keep the story positive, Clausen played dynamite, if they only could've put all 3 facets together during the season, I'll take a Bowl win anyday, as to guys not liking teammates, i'm sure this happens everywhere, I didn't see anything last night, they seem like a tight knit group.

yeah ndinla, i didn't see that either. the guys were very loose and positive which was the complete opposite during the season. i think, for the players, this may be a turning point in their careers. i'm not saying it's NC or bust next season, but with the talent we have coming in and combine that with this current crop of talent, next season should be a BCS bowl berth.

go irish!!!!

whaat haha the screen is a good reason we moved the ball tonight my friend. we ran literally about 15 screens and id say they help move the ball and winning 49-21 is puttin the nail in the coffin. i disagree

I cant believe this is even being discussed. To find ANYTHING negative about the game last night is just looking for something bad just for the sake of looking for it. If you look hard enough, you could find something to gripe about any game between any 2 teams in the country.

I was 11 the last time we won a bowl game, I am just going to enjoy this one.

Merry Christmas to all!

I said it in a thread earlier in the month, this game is the start of 2009 for us. This is do or die for Charlie and I think we looked bad ass.

The passing game was superb. The defense great, except on the 3rd and long plays.

But, I am still worried about the running game. We need the misdirection plays, etc, along with some tough O-line run blocking. We have the talent, wonder if CW will change some of the running schemes?

WOW! I seen the exact opposite too. He was joking with teammates and looked like he was having a good time. Some people can find anything to be negative about...total BS!
