Why are we all Notre Dame Fans?

I discovered this site about a week ago because my closesest friend who is a bigger ND fan than even me told me about it. I came on here very excited hoping to meet other fans that had a serious intrest in the Program and the direction it was headed. To some of you it is headed South and to others it is headed North. Both opinions are fine and there is evidence to support either viewpoint. I have noticed that there have been some wars of the words, if you will, by some of the members. That is the last thing we need, we should all stick together and grasp on to our common bond.

I would appreciate everyone to not critize one another on this thread. I would like to know all members stories as to why they are a ND fan. I believe that maybe we can see the commen intrest of each other and be able to accept each others opinions a little more. For instance I personally have great faith in Jimmy as the QB. I believe his reputation preceeded him a little and Charlie put a little too much on his shoulders too soon. However, I think that with experience and maturity he will become a great college qb.(In moments during the season I was excited and confident and in moments I felt like an idiot for believing in him.) My friend, however, believes Jimmy will take a seat in the spring and Dane will be the man. He always mentions the High School All-American game where Dane and Michael Floyd looked like soulmates as his defense in the argument. We are great friends despite the extreme difference in opinion on a key subject. I believe when you know where someone came from in thier journey to ND it is easier to accept a difference in opinion.

My Story:
I was 9 yrs. old and I had just kind of gotten into college football. I had seen all kinds of teams on tv and I really like the Mich. helmets. My dad is from Northern Iowa and he was a Hawkeyes fan, but liked ND alot because when he was a kid that was all that was on tv. I played sports myself and have always loved the passion of teamwork and believing in each other enough to succeed when the odds were against you. I will never forget watching the ND v. FSU game in '93. After that game when Lou Holtz spoke of never giving up, and never doubting yourself I was hooked. I wanted to learn all I could and I kept finding things I loved. The history, the tradition, the championships, and more importantly the fact that this was a Catholic University. I too had attended and would continue to attend catholic schools through High School. Every Sat. for 15 yrs. (most of all of you would consider the worst in school history) I have watched and dreamed of a National title. I now have a three year old daughter and she can't count past 20 but if one of you asked who wore #7 for ND she would tell you, "Thats Jimmy, he's the quarterback, he throws it to #3." I love ND most because the students and the athlete work harder than anyone else and that is why they are there. ND has always, and will always win with integrity. If they chose not to, it would be a much sadder day in my life then any loss or collection of losses(0-5 start) could ever be.

I would like to hear the story of any other member that cares to share.

... Saw TV, and football games caught my attention. Liked Tennessee (checkered endzone or fleeting athletes?), but saw ND game and end of story. Gold helmets. Navy jerseys. Gold pants. Athletes busting their nuts...

In 1988, I watched my first Notre Dame football game early in the season with my father. We didn't have cable some of the only football on Saturdays was Notre Dame.

My love of Notre Dame grew over time. In 1988 when we won that National Championship beating WV it was one of the coolest nights. As an impressionable 10 year old seeing Tony Rice run around I was estatic.

I remember expecting a NC every year after that. 89,90,91,92 all went by with nothing.

A freshman in HS in 93, I remember watching every game that year. I remember I was on a trip in 93 and couldn't be pulled away from that FSU game. Beating Bowden and Charlie Ward was so sweet. Then the heartbreak that next week. In 93 I was getting Blue and Gold Illustrated sent to me and I was buying every SI issue with us on it. I remember the picture of Flannigan with that gay looking half shirt and how at the time I thought it was the coolest thing. Since then I have been to an ND game almost every year, sometimes 3 or 4 games in a year.

I have gained some friends along the way that love ND just as much as me and we have started attending games together. Some of the best moments of my life have been spent inside ND on gameday.

I just wish everyone believed in the Irish like the guy that started this thread. A credit to ND fans, who don't want to fight or troll but want to talk about ND in an inspiring light. Way to go NDfan537. You deserve to be commended. Someone trying to bring people together on the board is a breath of fresh air. From what I've seen over the last 3 months it's usually based on negativity.

When I lived in Northwest Indiana as a kid I watched ND every Saturday. Since I moved to New Mexico for better weather I still watch ND every Saturday. I will always be a fan no matter where I live. ND for life baby..............

being that i grew up in a time when cable and espn were not in the same sentence, all i saw on college football over the weekend was nd or acc games. nd won out. it's a tradition like no other, and it's strictly class. even though i didn't go to school their, there will always be a place in my heart for nd. i've gone up there twice to see games and it's been great experiences.

Everyone on my mom's side of the family is 100% Irish Catholic and her Dad was in the local Notre Dame Club and went to games every year.

My Irish uncles raised me the right way, as I was the first grandson in the family and my Dad was a head football coach. I was on VHS (and still have it) singing the ND Fight Song at the age of three.

In 1992 I was seven when ND and PSU played in the Snow Bowl and we were at my grandparents' house for it. I sat on Grampy's lap and watched my first ND game.

I didn't become a hardcore fan like this until 2006 when I saw ESPN do that segment on Clausen. Then I started following recruiting and the rest is history.

Academics, tradition, the spirit of Notre Dame, and doing things the right way.

My heritage, both paternal and maternal, is 100% Irish-Catholic. My kids won't be purebreds....my fiancee is a Pollock. But growing up with that background there were only three things that were certain to happen every weekend: ND football, Church and two people getting into an argument about something irrelevant.

I went to a small catholic high school that competed against bigger schools--and won--in all sports. I guess it's only natural that I'd be an ND fan. I never even thought of being anything but an ND fan. I have an uncle that has coached college football for a long time and I've rooted for his schools, too but they never supplanted ND in my heart. I think it's damn near genetic for my family.

My uncle,God rest his merry Irish soul, took me to a game at South Bend. Since then, I have always pulled for the Irish. I try to make at least one game a year. I like some other teams,Ohio State is one...but The Irish will always be #1 to me.

Well, I grew up in South Bend, in fact, could see the Dome from my back window. Those of you who DON'T know; non-alum or employees of the University either really love or REALLY hate the Irish - yes, there is plenty of hate in St. Joe county. So in a split household (Dad a Purdue fan, but followed ND, Uncle an IU fan, and grandpappy Irish all the way), I had to make a decision. I recall watching Beuerlein during the 85 season (or was it 84, I'm getting old). 86 was rough, but 88 was a glorious year, as was 93, until Bobby begged and begged and finally got his lifetime achievement award. I wrote a high school term paper (South Bend Clay High - 1 mile up the road from campus) on the great robbery of 93.

When I lived in Northwest Indiana and moved out West, I told people that in Indiana, just as many people hated Notre Dame as loved Notre Dame. They thought I was B.S. them. Like Arkansas about 99% of the people are Razorback fans. That was weird seeing everyone going for the same team, I wasn't used to that. I'm not sure if New Mexico people go for the same team? A lot of people here are from Texas and every other state. Where I live we have an USAF base here.............

strange as it may sound the reason i am a notre dame fan is my mom.

i also remember beurlein and those teams of the early 80s in which my love was set. my mom is catholic and irish she enjoyed the tough hardnosed play of the team and got me to realize that those are the things that are important.

How about sisters? My sister has always claimed to hate football. Got home late to watch an ND game one year to hear my sister screaming as I opened the door. When I sprinted in, she was alone in the house in front of the TV in a crouched Tiger position on the couch, with eyes of the Tiger. I asked her what had happened. She was watching ND football and an ND RB had just run over the defense, passing out as he scored.

I was stunned that she was even watching the game. Her secret is safe with me. I will never tell anyone.

ND that was an awsome story. I want to tell you my wife hates catholics, football, and anything that has to do with sports. She was a band geek so the fb team took the attention from the band. Lol. It is okay but what you have to do son or daughter is get them up every saturday morn. and have them watch the ND game. There is nothing more enjoyable in my life then the feeling I get when my three year old wants to watch the game.

Also when they are playing poorly kids always have an innocent opinion and it makes it almostbearable. GO IRISH, all of you on this thread are true fans keep the messages comin' it is nice to here all of your storys.

That sounds like solid advice. I will definitely have them up and watching. You tell your wife that there is nothing wrong with catholics!!

Something about church cracking down on sin.

Want to.

But woke up late for church yesterday and a Mormon walked off with curvaceous lady I wanted (third pew on the right) just before Monsignor walked away.

I am showing up on time next Saturday. Or is it Sunday?
