Hey maybe we should give a prize to the one millionth post about the coaching situation. Have we past that mark yet? Here is my entry!
The coach talk around the boards is at a dizzying pace. Names are being thrown around like nothing seen before. I do think we need to heed the warnings of Todd Blackledge from last night. Do not make the change just to make the change. If we are going to make a change, they better have the coach signed sealed and delivered before the fire CW. I do believe Lou was signed sealed and delivered before Faust was let go. Here are the names of the contenders. One other point to consider is how much time do we give the new guy, especially if his schemes for offensive and defense do not fit the players we have now.
Urban Meyer. Good thing it is Advent season for us Catholics and we all can practice forgiving. We have called him just about every name in the book, since he stood us up at the alter 4 years ago. Also his stealing a couple recruits has not hurt his image with us. His recruiting tactics have not endured him to anyone in college football. My question is this, has his family really grown up enough for him to handle Notre Dame now? Fours years is not a long time, he has am 18, 14, and a 9 year old. Will he move them again? Go from Utah to Florida was a dream. Florida to the Midwest, not so much! Another point is will he come under our terms or his. Would he want some admissions department leeway? How much would Florida put up to keep him? How long would he stay?
Brian Kelly. I do not know a lot about him. Great a Grand Valley State. Average at CMU and 2 big season at Cincy. Can he recruit? He was only at CMU and Cincy for 3 years, did some winning with others guys players. Winning in the Mac and Big East is a little different than SEC, Big 12, or Pac-10. To short of a resume for me to think he could succeed at ND. Would he get ND.
Mike Leach. Would he really leave Texas Tech for us? Has a great thing going there. Similar to Meyer leaving Utah 4 years ago, Florida was easier to recruit for. I think he stays there, easier to recruit. Even if he picks up Texas leftovers, he has a lot. Does build some great offenses. Would he get ND or would he be another Davie and think there are better jobs out there.
Butch Davis. Has been a winner everywhere he went in college. Has had a past of rules infractions. Interesting choice. He is at a basketball school now, where no matter what he does it will be second fiddle. Recruiting there can not be easy, some in state talent but not enough to build a consistent winner. Not sure he would pick us over Clemson or some other big time southern schools (Auburn).
Jon Gruden. It would be great. The team would never lack emotion and fire. NBC might have to remove all mics from the ND sideline! Would definitely get ND, but would he get the college game. Did spend about 6 years as a college assistant. How much would it take and would he really want to come.
Skip Holtz. Not getting as much buzz as the 5 others I mentioned, but is getting some. Understands ND just as much, if not more than anyone listed. Good offensive coach, works wonders with what little he has. Like Kelly would becoming to the biggest job of his career. Could he pull a Kiflin and get his dad to come one board?
Charlie Weis. I just added him for the fact we do not know if he is going. What if he made some great staff adjustments. Call it a reboot. Say Walt Harris as Offensive coordinator, his offenses were not bad at Pitt, he beat us twice. We probably have the players for his offensive scheme. Plus his head coaching experience could be an asset to CW. Andy Heck or Aaron Taylor as O-line coach. Junior Bryant or Chris Zorich as D-line coach. A top notch QB coach. Could these staff adjustments make CW a winner?
There are others listed out there, but this post would have taken days to write and by that time news of the decision could have leaked out!
