No longer a big SI fan. Gone are the days of Frank Deford and other unbiased quality journalist. However this article is very good.

Weis is overmatched at Notre Dame - Tim Layden - SI.com

That being said, I still think with the proper staff adjustments CW could right this ship. Maybe he needs a staff member that is his polar opposite, an emotional, get in your face, rah rah guy. Also, maybe some one to show the value of good line play and quality running game.

Layden's article in SI was insightful and I believe "right on." I have been a ND fan since the late 30's (just about 70 years). There are very few of us left, but we keep rooting for ND. But the world has changed deeply and college football with it. Though I have a grandson who is addicted to ND football, the truth is that
much of "glamour and glitz" of ND has been removed over the past two decades by poor teams, ineffective coaches and the raw commercialism of our time. Best to just take ND football as a casual pastime then to think "the legend will be repeated" (apologies to Leahy, Parsegian, and Holtz).

With all due respect, I could not disagree more. Why be a fan if we just take it as means to pass the time? If greatness is not what we strive for as fans, how can we expect players and coaches to strive for it?

Weis and Leach

Weis needs to get rid of Latina, Oliver, Mendoza, and Haywood. We have no O or D line play nor fundamentals, and our running game stinks. We have 300 pound linemen and get pushed around. Weis hired these people based upon recommendations from friends. That's nice, but it didn't work. If he gets another year, he must get coaches who can develop players and recruit, especially linemen. Neither Oliver nor Latina do a good job there. Weis does well recruiting the skill players.

If Weis is fired, I heard Mike Leach (Texas Tech) is very interested. He built and taught his team how to win with fundamentals. I am certain there are other coaches also interested. I am not getting into "How do I know questions." I just heard it through a personal friend of mine who has very close ties to ND, so this is just interesting talk.

Some people will say that Mike Leach is a Mormon, not a Catholic, (Ara was Protestant and a hell of a coach), (personally, I don't care if he's a Martian if he can coach ND to a championship), and I don't think it matters to the administration as long as the ca$h keeps flowing in from football revenue. If the team continues to stink, and the money flow stops, then the administration will have to act. A big loss tommorrow will determine a lot. If competitive, and Weis gets a new staff, then he may stay.

RK I have been a fan about half as long as you. Thanks for making me feel like a rookie. I agree with you on the landscape of college football. It has changed. I have seen ups and downs and as you well know this is the longest drought of being a dominant team that we have had. Many things contribute to that end. It is not necessarily a coaching problem. I think we can be formidable again but I dont think you will ever see the domination of decades on that scale again. Talent is more spread out and kids can get exposure anywhere. I guess Texas would be the example for recruiting dominance now. Florida and
USC a close second. Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, now Alabama, OSU, USC and Texas get the best coaching staff nods. After that it is a gap that cant be measured. The rest of the have nots I guess. But, any team can play with the top tier teams on a given day. But, if that team is clicking (Oklahoma vs Texas Tech) (Florida vs just about everyone but Ole Miss, which proves my point) only the best of the best can stay with each other on their best day. The emotion factor, pride, ability and preparation all have to be there. Even PSU should be mentioned for a nice comeback, everyone wrote Paterno off a few years back.
I agree with you on the original legend being a memory but I think we can throw our hat in the mix every once in awhile with a little luck. "NOONE" wins NCs every three or four years anymore.

I seriously doubt that Leach would come this way.

I agree with that too. What I think is that we will not see the dominance that we saw from the 40s on up and into the early nineties. I am talking about a National Championship twice a decade and a runner up twice a decade. The field is just too even now. Innovative coaching and schemes and constant changes keep things difficult to stay on top of the heap all the time. But hell what do I know.

Leach does not have the ND personality that is so badly needed. Weis has ticked so many people off with his arrogance at ND that many in the administation want him gone. WHile Leach is not arrogant, he does not personify the type of head coach ND needs. Who do they need you ask? Only one guy can right the ship, his name is Urban Meyer.

Urban Meyer is not an ND man. He's not a fit. Pray to God he does not come here.

I agree, but I don't see Meyer leaving the good weather and the ability to get any recruit, no questions asked.

ND's recruiting standards are much higher.
