Why we should refuse a Bowl bid

I have given this a lot of thought. We will obviously get a better Bowl than we deserve due to our history and our fan base. Which means, we will face a better opponent than we are capable of beating.

I say stay home and save us the embarrasment of an a$$ kicking. Frankly, if we didn't play some very bad teams like Stanford, Navy, San Diego State, Washington, and Syracuse (HaHaHa) - we wouldn't even be Bowl eligible. If we played in the Big East or ACC we would have been lucky to win 5 games all season.

We should absolutely GO to a bowl and accept the bid, wherever it is. Gives the kids an extra few weeks of practice, and god knows we need it.

Yea declining a bowl bid is just plain stupid. We should accept it graciously and use the extra practices to our advantage.

El Paso here we come....

Decline please. Why get thumped again? More than likely we will be playing Oregon. Oregon would beat us by 25 points easily.

Practicing for a few weeks in December will NOT help us in September of '09.

I agree. It's the same lousy coaching and that "extra two weeks" of coaching will not make the kids better players.

I see what you're saying, but ask any college coach, and they say that those 3-4 extra weeks are huge. The younger players get tons of reps, it allows you to really determine the improvement (orlackthereof) of the redshirts. And as bad as the coaching looks, there are plenty of players who have improved tremendously, so of course you want to allow those players to continue to develop. Hayseed Smith didn't even play last year, now look at him. Golden Tate, please. JC has gotten way better. McCarthy, T. Smith, Anello (!!!), Rudolph, etc. All these guys have gotten better since last year or as the season has progressed. To rob them of extra practice time and the opportunity to play in their first bowl would be wrong IMO. Of course you accept the bowl bid.

Now, on the other hand, the thought of losing yet another bowl game makes me sick. In fact, my head is spinning. Of course you say no to the bowl game!!!

(Actually, you say yes IMO, and you go into the bowl game with the mindset that you're going to win. God I hope so...)

Extra practice, money, and reward for the kids who bust their butts week in and week out. Yes, go to a bowl.

go, there has already been enough embarrisment this season, if we lose im sure we can take whatever is left, if we win we'll feel better going into next season and a nice way for charlie to end his ND coaching career. b/c we all know that charlie is a quality guy and a class act especially all he has done w/ hannah and friends and even after the SC lost he went straight to the USC locker room with his son and said congrats.

Take the financially compensation out of the game. We need to play for a few reasons.
1. I believe we get 11-15 practices before the game. Who can dispute we need more practice.
2. I am sure the players are tired and are hesitant to prepare 4 weeks for one team. The last time we decided not to go to a bowl as players was in 1996 when Holtz left and Davie was coming in. There was so much Termoil, a lack of a permanent staff, and for recruiting. I was on that team and at first I thought I get a longer vacation. Watching the other bowl games made me sick. Class is obtained by action

I think we should go. They players and coaches need the practice. Declining sends the wrong message. Also, what happens down the road if we have another bad year for whatever reason. If we say no now we may not get asked again. Plus if immediately after the USC game we make changes to the staff, it would be great to have those new guy around.

Why we should refuse a bowl bid? Because we will play Oregon or Cal from the pac 10 thats why. They would destroy us.

why we shoudnt go to bowl game

why we shoudnt go to bowl game

No way no how, forget the added practice stuff, show a little class and just try to do better next year. Its part of the problem and it makes us look like any other lower 50 school. Its about time this program started doing better and not by winning the Mickey Mouse Bowl over another 6-6 team. To even think about going is demeaning.

Are you kidding me? This is a ridiculous discussion! Ok so the season didn't go that well... So what should we do? hide, bash the players, and fire the coaches! That is all I've been reading here..... and now some of you want to not go to a bowl game because your afraid of losing........Give me a break! This is such a no-brainer:

1. Extra practice... we need it!
2. Another game..... It would help our younger players!
3. How about getting that damn monkey off our back! Any bowl win at this point would be a success or do you wanna here more about how we have not won a bowl game in how many years....come on people wake up!..... At least we get a chance to shut people up!

I think not going is classless. Its not like we are demanding a certain bowl takes us. We are INVITED, and we should accept GRACIOUSLY, with class.

You stand for the exact opposite of EVERYTHING Notre Dame stands for. Oh no please we dont want the big bad team from the pac-10 beat us. Be a man for crying out loud.

I have to agree with this. We are not in a position to snub a bowl that invites us. Some would not see it as a snub, but as us saying we are undeserving. But it's kind of a snub. I know people think we should be better than some crazy named Bowl, but at this point we're not. The reality is that we are a outlying bowl team. Let's accept that and do our best to win whatever bowl we are invited to. There are players on this team who bust their butt week in and week out to win. If ND is invited to a bowl, those players deserve a chance to play and win that bowl game.

3 great reasons why we should go to whatever bowl wants us! We can't worry about losing to a Pac-10 team. It wouldn't be any worse than losing to a 2-8 Syracuse team! Playing against better competition in the bowl game will set the tone for how the Irish need to play next season.

Good stuff as always WD.

I guess we (yeah, I have accepted that I use the word "we" when it comes to ND...) could gain much needed experience from playing a bowl game. Players and coaches will learn how to prepare for a bowl game. They are going to need that experience for next year, when we play in a bigger bowl. Doubt that payout of whatever bowl we attend will pay for the cost of attending, but...

I don't want them to go because they don't deserve it...

Period.

(But one advantage could be that they learn how to behave out of town after exams and prepare for a bowl game.)

But back to my Period point.

Period. They don't deserve it. No "thank you for particpating in our .com shaving cream bowl, you lil whore. Here is your ribbon.."

Notre Dame's independence comes into play here. If ND ends 6-6, .... all bowls have the following rule to live by:

a bowl can only select a 6-6 team from a conference if no 7-5 team from that league is still available.
Similarly, bowls seeking an "at-large" team to replace a conference that did not produce enough eligible teams cannot choose a 6-6 team if there is a 7-5 team available.

Aside from some vague Big East tie in, ND can receive a 6-6 bid only if all other D-I schools 7-5 or better are not available.

Not saying nothing will happen, but it have to after all other suitors are considered and rejected and that might be hard

that's what she said.

I was about to rip you, but then your last line slayed me. I admit I'm a sucker for that's what she said jokes (my lady HATES them, but the Michael Scott in me forces me to say it!!!).

Good post. There's so many damn bowls out there, I'm sure some bowl committee will find a way to get ND in. I mean, who would bering in more $$$, ND or firggin Southwest Houston St?

But seriously, you said you were done trolling here. I thought your vacation was over??? Can't get enough? Back to pour salt in our wounds? Makes me wonder...
