CB Darrin Walls is obviously not here this year due to academics, but i havent heard anything about him in awhile and was wondering if anyone heard anything about him returning for the 09 season. he was our best cover corner in 07 and still would have 2 years of eligibility left if he were to return.

Supposedly he was going to enroll at Holy Cross and return to ND next semester or next fall. I never heard definitely either.

He never went to Holy Cross, nor do I believe there were ever any plans for him to go to Holy Cross. From what I know, he is at home in Pittsburgh. He has been to ND for quite a few home games though. He should return for the spring semester.

I don't remember where I heard the holy cross thing, but thanks for the clarification. I'd love to see him back, especially now that McNeil has grown by leaps and bounds. It will be a huge jump from how Lambert has played at times.

I have been a loyal ND fan for as long as I have watched football and I have never disliked an ND player as much as Terrail Lambert. I almost cry when I see #20 on the field. There are those out there who will point to a few great plays that he's made (like when he brought us back against Michigan State 2 years ago for a monster come back win)...but for every 1 good play he makes, he makes 10 terrible ones...make that 20 terrible ones. There was a play last week where BC threw a short out route in the end zone and TL never once turned around and looked to see what was going on. I can not fathom why he is getting playing time over Robert Blanton.

I will cherish the day when I do not have to see the back of a #20 jersey on every big play!!!

Lambert gets beat short way more often than he gets beat long. McNeil has been beaten his fair share of times this year as well. I think Blanton will be a great one down the road, but he had some pretty horrible tackle attempts vs. Pitt, and he gets beat short an awful lot too. I think there's a rule that fans must despise one defensive back every year. Typically, one of the oldest players wins that role, so I guess Terrail is the winner for the year.

Lambert is certainly no Bobby Taylor or Shane Walton, but he is a decent corner. I think if you actually looked at the tape, you'd see him making plenty of good plays along with his bad plays. To dislike him more than any other ND player ever is very, very sad.

I'm sure he's a good guy and all and I don't have any disdain against him personally, but I'm sorry say that IMO (and many others evidently) he is NOT a decent cornerback!!!

im just glad to hear Walls is going to be returning for next year, hopefully next semester to get him back in football shape, if he hasnt already stayed in it. he could have helped on alot of key plays this year, like the 4th and 6 vs. pitt. thanks for the info fellas.

Before Terrail, there was Ambrose. Before Ambrose there was Preston Jackson. Before him was Clifford Jefferson. Before him was Ivory Covington. All horrible players who everyone couldn't wait to leave, all the most disliked players anyone had ever seen, all players who only ever get burnt, all not even good enough to play interhall, (no one said that here, I'm overgeneralizing and combining the things I've read and heard over the years). Yet, at the same time, they were all good enough to play for and start a significant number of games for the University of Notre Dame... which I would say makes one a decent corner. They were all evidentally better than the guys on the bench, but really, that's the only place a defensive back will ever be safe from criticism... on the bench.

Who will it be next year? Raeshon? RJ? Gary? Darrin? I hope they are all All-Americans, but I doubt it.

Don't be so quick to bash Lambert. He almost single handedly won us the Michigan St. game in '06. Pick 6 to take the lead, then another INT on the ensuing drive to seal the deal... Anyway, it would be great to have D-Walls back, especially if he is still conditioned and in top shape. Maybe he can make a Shonn Greene like return to CFB. For those of you who don't know who that is, Greene is the dark horse Heisman candidate RB at Iowa. He was out for a year due to academics, worked out like a beast, and made a most Ali like return to the ring. Although, if Walls doesn't come back, I am more than okay with that. I think that we are going to have a great d-backfield. We'll have Sergio and McCarthy at the safety positions, McNeil and Blanton at starting corners, and then Gray as a nickelback, possibly Jashaad Gaines or a young talent at dime. I think it will be the best d-backfield in a while. The reason why there will not be a corner like those that tgolden mentioned above is because these guys have the raw talent. Those guys in the past who have messed shit up for us had great football minds but were not quick enough. McNeil, Blanton, Gray, and Sergio can all fly, and McCarthy moves well for his size (I think he is Zbikowski-esque, hopefully that won't get me in trouble!). For real though, D-walls or no D-Walls I am excited to watch our continually improving defense. GO IRISH BEAT NAVY!!!!

Lambert has the speed, experience, and athleticism to be good. The problem is he NEVER turns his head to make a play on the ball. I'd hoped he improved after last year, but the same problem continues. McNeil has been good as a first time starter, and he and Walls should be great next year. I've been a quiet supporter of Lambert, but I'd have no problem if Gray and Blanton got his reps.

I did hear something about about H. Smith moving back to his original strong safety position. Although, I don't see it happening. You have to put your best players out on the field. Those might be the three best players on our D next year (Smith, McCarthy, Sergio). I would just assume that Sergio would step in David Bruton's spot at FS with his speed and coverage skills. McCarthy is a SS by blood, that is his position and I could not see him at FS. Harrison Smith could be OLB or SS, but I think he is more of an asset at the OLB position. Either way I would think those three will all be on the field a majority of the time. If in a 3-4 it will probably be Sergio at FS, McCarthy at SS, and Harrison Smith at OLB. Then, you have the flexibility of moving Smith to a 5th back/2nd SS type position without bringing in a new package. Also, I would still like to have Smith in the OLB position because when John Ryan gets down on the LOS, I think we need Harrison at LB.
