Here is some news on Friday's practice: Practice Observations_ 8/8/08 | The Journal Gazette
Notre Dame football -- it's baaack. As are the practice observations, a staple of Insights since its inception in August 2006. Practice took place on the new Fieldturf practice fields installed where Moose Krause Stadium used to be and they are impeccable. Each yard-line is marked off -- a vast improvement from the concrete-like grass they had practiced on prior -- and the field even looks somewhat like Notre Dame Stadium's natural grass, with diagonal lines adorning the end zones.
Impressed with the new turf, which had a bouncy and spongelike feeling to it, these initial observations are offered.
As per NCAA regulations, players were in jerseys, helmets and shorts for the first practice of the year. It'll be this way Saturday and Sunday as well.
There's a Montana in practice -- freshman walk-on quarterback Nate Montana, who is wearing No. 16. Some players were giving Montana a hard time during his first practice, saying "Oh my god, Joe Montana." Of course, wearing the red jersey that could be associated with both the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs -- the two teams papa Joe played for -- probably didn't help.
Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Clausen gave an exhuberant yell during calisthentics drills.
Not sure what was going on -- a lost jersey, punishment, whatever -- but sophomore wide receiver Duval Kamara wore No. 60 instead of his usual No. 18 during practice. Wide receivers coach Rob Ianello made sure to come over to give him a hard time about it.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis joked with quarterback Evan Sharpley that the media only asked about his baseball skills. Except that he was pretty much right, mainly because there isn't a quarterback competition this year.
Scouts from the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints showed up.
At tight end, Will Yeatman looks bigger than he did a year ago. His arms are huge. And sophomore Mike Ragone also looks markedly bigger, not quite Yeatman's size but certainly larger than the wide receiver build he had last year. Don't remember if he had it last year or not, but Ragone had a brace on his left knee Monday.
Michael Floyd -- more on him later -- looks like he fits right in, size-wise, with the rest of the wide receivers.
First-team offense: WR: Duval Kamara and David Grimes; FB: Asaph Schwapp; HB: Robert Hughes; QB: Jimmy Clausen; TE: Mike Ragone; OL (l-r): Paul Duncan; Eric Olsen; Dan Wenger; Chris Stewart and Sam Young.
Second-team offense: WR: Robby Parris and Golden Tate; FB: Steve Paskorz; HB: James Aldridge; QB: Evan Sharpley; TE: Will Yeatman; OL (l-r): Mike Turkovich, Andrew Nuss, Thomas Bemenderfer, Trevor Robinson, Taylor Dever.
Third-team offense (No WR): QB: Dayne Crist; HB: Armando Allen; FB: Mike Navarez; TE: Kyle Rudolph; OL: Lane Clelland, Mike Hernandez, Matt Romine, Braxston Cave, Mike Golic Jr.
Others in attendance: New athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who was literally everywhere Insights was Monday -- at Charlie Weis' news conference, the assistant and players conferences, men's basketball open practice and then football practice. For one of his first days on campus, he's making the rounds well. Also there: former Notre Dame All-American and College Football Hall of Famer Chris Zorich.

Weis' impressions of Day 1
Posted: August 09, 2008 01:00 PM
Here's a typical Q&A exchange from a Notre Dame media day interview:
Reporter: "Coach, what do you think of Player X?"
Coach: "I don't know. I haven't seen him practice yet. Ask me tomorrow or next week."
Media day is great for the general-impression stuff and it's a gold mine for the reporters who aren't here every day and can swoop in, get a bunch of soundbites and move on to the next school, but there's just not a lot of good information out there because the coaches haven't seen the players live yet.
That's why the first question of Charlie Weis on Day 2 of camp is always something along the lines of, "Now that you've seen them practice, what do you think?"
It was the same Saturday, and we can now pass along actual information and opinion from the coach himself. So here we go:
• The team is in "very good shape," Weis said. "That was encouraging. The only guy we didn't know if he'd go at full speed was (Will) Yeatman, and he went full speed pretty much the whole day, too. It was good to see everyone out there and healthy and running around. Obviously, Ruben (Mendoza) did a good job, because they were in very good shape."
• A "bunch" of freshmen stood out on the first day, but that's partly because many of them were playing against third-teamers, like defensive end Ethan Johnson.
"Ethan Johnson is a guy who looked really good yesterday, but he's also running against the third offensive line," Weis said. "So now all of a sudden, you take a guy like Ethan Johnson and put him against the first offensive line, you see if you see a lot of the same things you saw yesterday, because yesterday he was in the backfield the whole day."
Many of the freshmen appear physically ready to play right now, though. Weis put running back Jonas Gray in this category Friday, and receiver Michael Floyd belongs there, too. Saturday, Weis added tight end Kyle Rudolph and linebacker Steve Filer to that list.
Rudolph weighed 215 pounds when Weis began recruiting him as a junior in high school. Now he's 255 and "still looks thin," Weis said. Filer was 205-210 in high school and is now 235.
"There's a big difference between a linebacker being 235 and being 210," Weis said.
One final note on the freshmen: Weis said the depth chart will change a lot in the next week or so as the coaches slot the first-year players.

Back out on the practice fields! And what a beautiful day it was out there today…
I received a message earlier telling me that the practice was going to be on the “new” fields. Considering that I had to ask if that was anywhere by the old fields, I realized how long it has been since I’ve been on campus – spring football. A lot has happened since then and that itch has finally been somewhat scratched today now that the offseason run is over.
Better With Time
The new practice fields look great, and is it just me that feels that nicer things always come around after you graduate? Same can be said for my high school. I take off and they get new fields, so all the sports (football, soccer, lacrosse, etc.) don’t have to play on one. At Notre Dame, the Gug is built and the team practices on grass turf not only inside, but outside now as well.
