I find it VERY strange...only five players are eligible to catch a pass during a particular play, right? So, I remember in HS if an OL was going to be eligible he had to let the ref know. Do they have to let the ref know which 5 players are eligible each play? If not I say it would be great!!! If they do have to let the other team know who is eligible I say it is junk!! It looks like something I would of tried with my sons flag football team a few years ago! I would not mind seeing Crist and Clausen both in the shotgun and our OL on the bench at this point!!!!!

I really don't think it could work at any level above the high school football but i love the idea of Clausen and Crist in the shotgun together with all our receivers around them.

To answer your guestion Jeremy I wounldn't think they have to tell the refs who is going out for passes just as long as no more than 5 guys go out for the pass. Its just kinda like a spead punt formation. I've seen it run for punts. Toledo's football team does something like it but there is only 4 players out wide, and there are 3 players in front of the punter. I believe thats how its a legal formation to run.

But what I dont get is how they can only have 3 guys on the LOS, dont you have to have 5 guys on which would make the tightends ineligable. (sp)

It Could Work

It Could Work

The ref's have to report any receiver to the defense who is not wearing an eligible number to receive a pass. But I suppose the defense could be confused in two ways.

First, if the 3 or 4 guys with linesman numbers come in,it would be hard to keep track of who was eligible and who wasn’t. The second factor is that the ref’s don’t have to tell the defense what players wearing eligible numbers will assume an ineligible position. For example an end (#80) inside a nominal tackle (#75) who is outside of him. #75 lines up on the line of scrimmage, #80 is ineligible. #75 takes a step back and becomes a flanker, all of a sudden #80 is eligible.

That’s a lot of shenanigans. If it got out of hand, it would not surprise me if a rule were instituted that limited the number of non-eligible numbers reporting in as eligible.

P.S. I can’t believe I’m back wasting time on this forum. ND Forever.

OK...I think this could work on the college level in limited capacity...for a series maybe. I am sure CW has seen it and if he thinks it will work will put it in. I just hope our OL hit the weights hard this summer and is ready to kick some a$$!!!!! I am sick of our OL being dominated game after game!!!!

Thanks for the info. I knew that already but the artical says that all the players wear eligible numbers though

RRF,

Thanks for the interpretation. I was not aware of that. If it's true - then while the strategy may be legal, it's really bogus. That's like the old 4 corners in basketball with the ending 8 to 4. Wrecks the spirit of the game. I'd change the rule right now.

No prob Steve. I've been at work all day and I have been thinking about how can they only have 3 people on the line. It doen't make sence to me that all of the players are eligible at the start ot the play. I want to watch the film of it on the website to see how they set up and how the plays are run.
