Golfers are definately athletes. Saying you can practice a little bit and go play golf is absolutely insulting. If you dont like golf, then you dont like golf, but you dont have to insult those who play. I am 26 years old, have been playing golf since I was 6, and I am so far away from being about to successfully compete its not even funny. Go walk 18 holes a day for 4 consecutive days, and oh yea, do that 8 months out of the year. Then tell me how your body feels.

Ohhhhhhhh....... So you have to be on the "Tour" to be an athlete? Thats hypocrytical.

you're missing steve's point.

Steve's point is what this thread is about. the original discussion was whether professional golfers are athletes. whether or not people who play recreational golf are atheletes is a red herring argument.

since you agree that football players are athlete, Steve's argument was that your relatives who you claim are not athletes, could go out and play football. that doesn't make football a non-athletic sport, just because your non-athlete relatives could play it. that argument is cogent.

The original discussion and the entire thread was trying to discuss whether professional golfers are athletes. not whether NDOM's relatives are athletic because they can go play golf recreationally.

I wasnt responding to the original question, I was responding to another post within the thread. No, I dont need to work on my reading comprehension skills. You need to be open to what others have to say before you make a smartass remark.

driving that beer cart in college was pretty tricky too :)

-hand-eye coordination of a NASCAR driver to keep that cart on the paths

-strength because no one lifted those coolers on the cart for me

-endurance because really those miles logged on the course got really boring

I didn't read every post here, but golf definitely involves athletes. I do not golf any more, but to be able to hit shots with pin-point accuracy they way they can and seem to do it every time is amazing, especially coupled with walking as much as they do in a four-day period. Yes, I realize they don't carry their own bags, but one of you go out an walk 18 in the heat four days in a row and tell me what you think.

If you are going to bust on them for weight issues or drinking, well...I have seen some rather rotund football and baseball players in my day, and if the NHL tested for alcohol, they might not have 3 players take the ice every night. Just sayin'.

I am with IrishinTN on this one. Yeah, professional golfers do not look like the stereotypical ideal athlete, but they are excellent athletes in their chosen sport.

I don't think all pro golfers could classically be considered athletes, but I do think some pro golfers are definitely athletes (Tiger Woods, for example).

There's a great line in a Tom Selleck movie, I think it was "Mr. Baseball" where he plays in the Japanese League. The team is doing calisthentics, and Selleck's character breathlessly moans, "We're not athletes, we're baseball players!"

All I'm saying is, those who play certain positions in pro sports have to be athletic. You're not gonna find any NFL linebackers who aren't incredibly athletic, but you certainly might find a few kickers who would collapse after a brisk game of "Duck Duck Goose." Some sports or positions require a very specific ability, such as hand-eye coordination, but not really much athletic grace.

So, basically my opinion is...

Aw hell, I don't know... I just read back that rambling diatribe I wrote and I'm more confused than ever.

...Move along; nothing to see here...

Golfers are athletes!!!! If fat a$$ linemen are considered athletes then golfers are definitly athletes. I played football, basketball, and ran track in high school...trust me golf is by far the hardest sport I have ever played!!!!

Agreed bro. Golf is by far the hardest sport to be consistantly good at. Basketball and football came kinda easy to me as you can rely on god given talent...In golf it not only takes athletic ability, but it takes a lot of time to master all of your clubs and be mentally tough...

I think that golfers are athletes in their own right. As for your remark about linemen, I guarantee you any lineman in NCAA Div 1 or the NFL is one hell of an athlete.

Tiger is a great athlete but golfers are not athletes. Any sport were you can play better after a 6 pack does not feature athletes.

I think its like any other sport...you must train to get better, and you have to have a combination of training, ability, God-given talent, and love for the game to be a professional at it. I love playing Golf, cuz I practice can I go on tour--HECK NO! I love football, could I have walked on at ND? Heck no.

Look at Tiger Woods, how can the man NOT be an athlete, his swing generates so much torque on his body he's already had like 2 knee surgeries. Although on of his injuries he got while rehabbing his knee, but still. Golfers are athletes too.

Everyone's a critic till they try and do it.

Kap, I think most of us play better after a 6 pack (sometimes 12) is because we could not play any worse.

I agree but if they are "athletes" then golfers are too. And for those of you who say "anyone can golf with practice" lol! Shooting 60 on 9 holes, putt-putt, and hitting a few good balls on the driving range are not considered golf!!!! Hit in the low 40's high 30's on 9 holes consistantly takes hand eye coordination, power, brains, and a lot of mental toughness. All qualities of superior athletes!!!
