Jon is more of an athletic QB, and he is also the teamate of ND commitment Sean Cwynar. Jon already picked up a verbal offer from Wisconsin at the recent Purdue Nike Camp, and he is planning on attending this weekend's Elite Camp at ND.

He is smaller than the normal pro-style QB's that CW likes to take. Any chance he would move to WR or safety?

I'm not sure. I know some of the early reports from guys that have seen him play reently haven't been overly impressed, and they don't think he'll get an Irish offer very soon if he gets one at all. If I'm not mistaken though I believe he had an injury that forced him to miss a few games earlier this year, so that may be the cause of his adv. performance of late.

Apparently we've offered, and he grew up loving us.

Lots of interest in 'too small' QB

Jon Budmayr was sitting in a hotel room in Lincoln, Neb., talking about his recruiting trip and buzzing about how impressed he was to meet Nebraska coaching legend Tom Osborne earlier in the day.

‘‘This isn’t the social capital of the world, not a lot of things to do on a Saturday night,’’ he said. ‘‘But it sure is an exciting place to be on a Saturday afternoon in the fall.’’

The Marian Central quarterback is a priority for some of the most high-profile programs in the country. He has been offered scholarships by Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northwestern and Arizona. Notre Dame, Tennessee, Iowa, Stanford and Boston College are interested.

‘‘I want to visit some schools this spring,’’ he said. ‘‘I want to decide before my senior year, in the next couple of weeks or when I fall in love with a school, what is the right fit for me — environment, academics, coaching staff, players, spirituality.’’

Budmayr said he talks to close friend and former Marian Central star Brian Bulaga, an offensive lineman at Iowa, every week to discuss the recruiting process. More than ever, he understands it is a business. But it is all about building relationships and trust.

‘‘The recruiting process is what you make it,’’ Budmayr said. ‘‘As long as you control it, you can make it enjoyable. But it can get as crazy as you want. My mom and dad make all the trips with me. I always loved Notre Dame when I was growing up. But you must have an open mind to all your options.’’

Jon also relies on advice from his father, Rick, sophomore football coach at Marian Central, and older brother Brody, a quarterback who plays at Benedictine.

‘‘I watched Brody go through it,’’ Jon said. ‘‘When he had to call coaches to say he wasn’t coming, it was tough on him. He was getting calls every night. Once he got it down to three or four schools, he said to me: ‘Gosh, how do you really know which is the right school?’ The answer is through prayer and talking to my parents.

‘‘Something will tell me it is the right school. That’s what happened to Brody. The more you get to know the coaches, you get a feel for them and start to trust them. But until you know them, you have to wonder. The first time I talk to a coach and he says I’m No. 1 on his board, I wonder if he is telling the same thing to 10 other kids.’’

Budmayr is rated with Glenbard North’s Evan Watkins and Maine South’s Charlie Goro as the leading quarterback prospects in Illinois in the class of 2009.

In his junior year, Budmayr passed for nearly 4,000 yards despite missing five games with a hamstring injury. Budmayr led Marian Central to the Class 5A state championship game in 2006 (a 35-14 loss to Springfield Sacred Heart) and to the semifinals in 2007 (a 10-9 loss to Morris).

But Budmayr acknowledges that some college coaches perceive him as being too small — at 6-1 — to be an effective performer at the major Division I level. He believes the programs that have expressed serious interest in him should dispel that theory, but he still plays with a chip on his shoulder.

Among the top three quarterback prospects in Illinois, the 6-6 Watkins committed to Northwestern last week. At the moment, Budmayr appears to be leaning to Wisconsin, which has tapped him as its No. 1 priority at quarterback.

‘‘I know a lot of people talk about my size. But this is what God gave me and I will make the best of it,’’ Budmayr said. ‘‘Some coaches want quarterbacks who are 6-4 or 6-5. But I think I can be effective in any system, pro-style or spread or West Coast offense.’’

Actually I don't think he has an offer yet. Rivals does not list him with one.

With Aaaron Murray and Allan Bridgford verballing to other schools recently, he may start to get more interest from the Irish.

Also, he now has 3-stras on both scout and rivals.

I don't worry about the size of any QB too much if I remember correctly Joe Montana and Doug Flutie were not very big. Tom Brady is not exactly huge either.:)

Tom Brady's 6'4" 225, he's an ideally sized QB.

Damn, I didn't think he was that big! Thanks for the correction DD.:embarrass My Bad.

Please let us not forget that Jon is a Junior in high school. At 6' 1" 190lbs., he still has time to grow.

Montana was 6'2" (decent heigth for a QB) and Flutie (the shrimp) was only 5'10". Then again, I always thought that Flutie was way overrated!

Seriously wondering why we are worrying about QBs....i mean, we have two great ones the past 2 yrs, if we offer someone it should just be a role player that knows they wont get much PT and wont transfer. This guy may do that, but idk why he wouldnt go to another school where he could get PT. Just my own opinion again, but why not try to spend a scholly on another solid Olineman?

Wanting more solid linemen every year is fine, IrishAddiction, but if you are building an elite program every year, it is imperative to have a quality QB in every class. None of us know which kid is the next star or a total bust. In my opinion, it is not only important to get kids quality kids who should excel in your system, but a national program needs a quantity of these players to protect itself from disaster (example: UCLA vs. ND last year...starter gets hurt and a walk-on has to take over).

A. 6-0/195 is minimum size for an NFL QB.

B. He plays against very good competition in the Suburban Catholic Conference, as did Cwynar, though the schools are smaller than Chicago Catholic League schools. The quality of football is real good.

C. Guided MCC as a sophomore to a 13-1 and state runner up season.

D. The Louisiana Purchase

I'm pretty happy about that, I really didn't like the offer when we sent it out. To short for my liking. Will they now please offer Morgan Newton.

as someone said earlier, we do have two studs in the stable and (all hype being) little montana in the wings. i really think he will be the quality backup when needed. i dont see him transfering and with time he may become quality. so yeah we should look into another quarterback but not press the issue for one. spend more time getting lineman on bothe sides of the ball and linebackers set for this 3 4 system. stay on the phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My gut tells me obtaining a QB is going to take more work than just offering another prospect. I think Newton will end up at Purdue or Illinois.

I think CW needs to really sell the opportunity for someone to come in and learn, get physically better and take over the reigns when ready. Right now, QB recruits see Claussen and Crist in line ahead of them and perhaps they think they don't want to wait.

nobody wants to ride the pine for 4 years. they want to be a player. depending on the person. but a true competitor would want to come in and take the job from them. look at dc. thats what he came here for. good luck but still hes a leader and a competitor. did you see the way he handled the team at the aa game? i hope more kids sign up soon b/c im getting antsy

I agree...It's tough to sell the second fiddle

That just would put that more pressure on the next year QB recruit , who would have to be ready to start as a JR- no ifs ands or buts.
