Hmmm. Should be interesting. Sampson is a helluva coach but he effed up pretty bad. Not sure whats going to happen to him.

It's fine that they support the coach like that. But threatening to stop playing, not very smart. Makes you wonder if they have thought about what will happen if the refuse to play and lose their scholarships.

IU needs to move quickly, the players know that Sampson is gone whether he's suspended or 'let go'. Apparently, Dakich ain't the one they want at the helm for now. Is it time to bring in Bobby Knight (in shining armor) to help the school in distress?

I'm not buying that, but it would great to see.

I remember some of the IU players making the same fly off the handle comments when Knght was fired. Hope they reign it in and see that they are just hurting themselves and the program even more.

This is why I have such respect for Bobby Knight. This is one sore subject for me. My son started dreaming about playing for a big time soccer school when he was in middle school, worked hard for years and made it happen. Then spent two years with the coach embroiled in controversy and who finally got fired for flagrant, major ncaa violations. The whole team suffered for it, many quit because the atmosphere was just poison.

So a cheating coach is just dirt to me, no matter how "nice" a guy he is. Give me the honest jerk anyday.

But Bobby won't come back. Too many hard feelings all around. I would love it, but obviously there are many that wouldn't.

This is a master stroke of genius by the IU administration. If they fire Sampson and promote from within, they're guaranteed to play in the NCAA championship game next year. And if they retain Sampson, they're a lock to win the whole thing!

In a black and white world, here's how the IU administration might proceed:

1) Really know and understand the values of your school.
2) If Sampson exhibits those traits, keep him. If he doesn't, part ways.
3) If he is let go, recruit and hire the best coach you can that lives your values.
4) Communicate your position as fiduciaries/caretakers of the school to players, students and all interested parties.
5) Since the circumstances under which the players committed to IU have changed due to no fault of their own, allow them out of their schollies without penalty. Or take the Bob Knight approach and tell the quitters to go eff themselves. "Nobody points a motherf***ing gun at my head."

They could lose a coupla players if they continue to back Sampson. I wouldn't let White or Gordon try to hold the admin hostage, especially for a cheater.

Southern Irish: "First, the reason IHateMarkMay is correct in bringing up the 2002 team is because you said that the last good team he had was in the early 90s. That team that Knight recruited would have been his team if he had not be fired. We will never know how they would have done with him as coach all the way through but my money is on Knight succeeding."

History repeating itself, it was a joke...no offense intended. Davis coached the team to the final game and the only way Bob could have topped that was to win the whole thing. More likely in 2002 they caught lightning in a bottle, had the advantage of Bob's knowledge of the game and the benefit of not having Bob curse them every step so they played looser.

Now is the time for IU admin to think long-term. ND took that approach with Charlie and I think it will pay off for them in the long run. Right values, work ethic and knowledge. Success will follow eventually.

Three championships, a Pan Am Gold and an Olympic Gold medal argue that "Bob cursing them every step" would have not hindered them since apparently it didn't hurt those teams.

They just said that they are in the process of working out a financial settlement with Sampson. That will probably calm down the players versus an outright firing.

edit: settlement for $750,000 and gives up right to sue. Dakich will be interim coach.

I wonder what will happen with the AD? and who would be a likely candidate for coach. They better not do another Mike Davis again
