Recurring Dream of Twisted Irony...

Pardon me for being factual for a moment.

Whether anyone likes it or not (even Charlie), this better be his dream job. Because if it turns out it ain't, the NYG or any other NFL team is going hire him as a head guy.

So the twisted logic of circuitous fate locks him in.

About Ty getting hired. It was not fundamentally a bad move. He did a pretty good job at Stanford. A school ND can baseline too pretty well. So they made the reasonable extrapolation.

(I can't believe it's after the season, a workday, and I'm still goofing off on an ND web site. When I could be out learning Mandarin Chinese or curing world hunger or something...)

I'm not sure why you say this. I'm sure that they wouldn't hire him /right now/, but if he finds the magic again and turns things around at ND, then he'll be just as hot a commodity as he ever was, if not a hotter one.

More generally, let me just say again that using the rumored (!) fact that Weis may (!) have used NFL offers to leverage more money from ND is just an ABSURD reason to conclude that he's not where he wants to be. I for one would love nothing more than to end up at ND after I'm done with grad. school, but I can tell you for sure that if I had a job offer from Harvard, I'd use it to try and get more moolah out of my alma mater. That's just how it goes.

John,

That's my point about the irony. I.e., If Charlie turns the program around, it does become his Dream Job. So he is suddenly not only extraordinarily fat but extraordinarily happy too. So may not want to leave. But if the program crashes and the refuse burns for a couple of years, Charlie's career as a head coach would be cooked in the flames.

(And there's plenty of subcutaneous fuel for that fire.)

I still don't get it - he took the job back when nobody else wanted it, apparently because (1) he loves his alma mater, and (2) he believed he could turn things around. I'm sure that both of those things are still true at present - and while he's not going to stop loving ND any time soon, it's of course possible that if things continue to go horribly then he might lose some confidence in himself. But if that happens then this might /stop/ being his dream job: I'd say, though, that right now while he still has confidence in himself and his ability to turn this thing around, it's /already/ just that. Success (or money, for that matter) isn't going to make it /become/ his dream job; it's just going to help to keep it that way.

I think you have over simplified Weis' moitivation for taking the job. I think at least part of his rationale in addition to your 1 and 2 above is:

3. It was probably the only HC position on the table at the time. Their is no doubt that Weis wanted to be a HC. He even had dangerous elective surgery in part because he felt his weight was getting him passed over for job.

Dream job or not, I doubt anyone is knocking on his door right now after a 3-9 season.

Point taken. It's still the case that his (supposedly) having used NFL offers to leverage more money and a contract extension out of ND doesn't show that he wasn't entirely happy where he was, i.e. that the HC job at ND wasn't the one he most wanted.

Yes, IF he did do what Kooch claims, that would possibly add to your theory of this being his dream job. I agree. Or it could be that he prefers the security of the ND deal. NFL = Not for long if you aren't getting the job done. If he could get NFL money with a 10 year guarantee from ND, it's really not much of a decision if you are looking at it from a finacial security standpoint. Of course, it's all speculation.

Steve, a funny post. Actually Mandarin Chinese might serve you well at the Olympics or ordering some take out in USA.

The only reason Charlie is fat is because he got so comfortable at New England and had nothing to worry about and it was the same the first two seasons at ND. Now that the wheels have fallen off this season and there is plenty to worry about I expect Charlie to shed about 250 lbs.

He already lost a bunch of weight in the last offseason, actually. I thought he looked pretty good this year.

Yea I thought he lost weight too... although it may have been from the negative part of the surgery/stress. I think he looks thinner (hope that trend continues) but more worn out/ pallid.
