Okay, maybe that doesn't have quite the ring or enthusiasm behind it as USC week. But, we need to wake up people. Drink a Pepsi!

This is the beginning of the future. Despite how bad of a taste this season has left in our mouths we had a bye week to binge and purge that sour taste away.

Now, let's hope the team did too, and will come out hitting this week! Let's go Irish.

I'm sure it will be hard for everyone to talk trash about a team that might take a bullet for us or our family's freedom.

Yet everyone can also agree that we need to win...

WE HAVE to win this one. I might jump ship if we end the 40 something streak to Navy. I think we will finally show something this week and for the next 4.

We need to win out, but this may be the best chance Navy has had for a win in the past 40 years.

Triple Option offense will be in full force with 4 basic plays:
1) give to the full back
2) option qb keep
3) option pitch
4) fake option and pass down the field

Very wise, maybe that's why you're the Sage. True, no trash talk. This isn't so much about beating Navy because of who Navy is, as much as it is playing well and winning for Notre Dame's sake.

johnnd05 also found out they added the Trinity Tiger's super dooper alli-ooper quadriple reverse, fake reverse, re-reverse option lateral until you get into the end zone, play to their playbook. http://www.irishenvy.com/irishroundup/pitch-right-and-left-and-right-and-left-and-right-and

I do not think we have any room to trash talk at all after this year! I am very worried about this game! Our offense has to stay on the field...our defense is bound to miss assignments eventually against the option. I still say we pull the win off because of our defense!

ND 17 Navy 10...defense scores and puts us in field goal range with fumble recovery!

In my mind it's less about winning than moving the damn ball for once. 400+ yards of total offense, PLEASE.

Hope you don't mind that I am using your baby pictures for my fantasy football league, so far I haven't been doing too well.

In my opinion, this is goin to be the closest game of the year. I don't think either team will blow the other one out. Both teams will try to run the ball. Navy will take a lot of time off of the clock which is probably good for us but we must make the most of our possessions. As we've seen in years past, even BQ and co had to wake up and make every possession count. I think we should be able to pass on Navy. Just some quick slants and quick outs should do enough to keep their LBs from cheating up. Even a nice long ball once in awhile should be good. It should be an interesting game but I'm gonna go with ND in a close one just based on talent. I think Golden Tate and Kamara will have breakout games. JA will hopefully be healthy and AA hopefully can get to the outside...Oh man, thats a lot of hopefullys...

400+ yards of total offense is asking for a lot

I would be happy with the offense having two long scoring drives the whole game and scoring more then one TD!!!!! How our expectations have lowered :sigh:

I agree that it's asking for a lot. But see here on how awful Navy's defense has been. If the proverbial ball doesn't get rolling on Saturday, I worry that it never will.

I agree they are awful but our offense is the worst in the nation IMO...I really hate to say that but I have not seen any offense look so bad this year! I think we will move the ball but stall a lot......

So, if we only rack up 150 yards total offense and lose 21-10...I think I will start calling for Weis' head!!! You can not use lack of good recruits as an excuse in a loss to Navy!!!!!!!!

Other facts to help put Navy's D in perspective:
Fri, Aug 31 at Temple W 30-19 --
Fri, Sep 7 at (15) Rutgers L 24-41 --
Sat, Sep 15 Ball State L 31-34 --
Sat, Sep 22 Duke W 46-43 --
Sat, Sep 29 Air Force W 31-20 --
Wed, Oct 10 at Pittsburgh W 48-45
Sat, Oct 20 Wake Forest L 24-44 --
Sat, Oct 27 Delaware L 52-59

6 out of 8 games, the've given up over 30 points to teams that are not exactly offensive juggernauts. 5 out of those 6, they gave up over 40 points. And keep in mind, the Navy offense tends to win the time of possession stat. So if they control the ball and opposing offenses are able to score that much, their D is a little pourus.

It's time our offense is less offensive and more productice. Let's go Irish!

Exactly my point. Nor can you use scheduling, or playing on the road too much, or inexperience, or needing a bye week, etc., etc., etc.

The offense has shown flashes. This week they face a defense that's downright dreadful. Do I think they can FINALLY get it together on Saturday? Honestly, I won't be surprised either way.

Wow!!! You guys are great, but so many of you forget that Notre Dame is NOT all about football.
I drive nine and half hours each way for EVERY home game. I never leave early. I always stay and applaud the team, and sing our Alma Mater. Light a candle at the grotto, and attend Mass after the game. It's not about the score, or our record. Notre Dame is so much more than that. Win or lose, I love the Irish, I love Notre Dame...."Our Mother"

I went to the Delaware vs Navy game, and it was awesome seeing both teams put up 50+ points in a supposed mis-match. However, most times that navy was about the 50 yard line or closer, they would go for it on 4th down, including a fake punt that almost went for a TD - happened on the next play.

The defense has to win this game for us, Navy has an offense that is hard to stop with a combination of option runs and crucial completions. We need to capitalize on this sort of fumble-prone offense and force turnovers. They're capable of scoring 52 points in a game, but they're also capable of giving up 59 points in the same game. Granted, Delaware has a very established offense (they've got a record setting running back, and their QB who transferred from Pitt is completing 75% of his passes, no INTs vs Navy) and is ranked higher than App State, but Navy's defense is vulnerable.

(Via the Roundup.)

A size-able advantage

Among the many reasons why there is no excuse for the Irish offense to have anything short of an absolute break-out day against Navy tomorrow is the huge size differential that is on their side this week. Here's a quick comparison chart to get things going (only starters and co-starters are listed):

In other words, Notre Dame's starting offensive line outweighs Navy's defensive line by an average of over 44 pounds, their starting offensive backfield of James Aldridge and Asaph Schwapp outweighs the average Navy linebacker by an average of just under 22 pounds, and the average Navy defensive back gives up almost six inches and thirty pounds to Notre Dame's starting wideouts.

Need more evidence that the Middies are undersized? Here's a position-by-position comparison of Navy's defense with those of Notre Dame's other 2007 opponents (note that I've generally used the most recent depth charts for these schools, rather than their starting lineups against ND - once again, only starters and co-starters are listed):

With the exception of BC, then, Navy will have far and away the smallest defense that Notre Dame has played so far in 2007 - a trend that continues, though not to quite the same degree, over the next three weeks.

It's not all about size, of course: it's also about strength, skill, speed, execution, avoiding stupid mistakes, and having the drive to physically dominate your opponent. But once again, there's no reason to think that the first three of these factors are heavily on the side of the Irish as well: it's really the others that have been holding them back all year, and it's those things that one would hope the coaching staff was able to use the bye week to work on. This team isn't going to become physically different overnight - nor need they do that, when opponents like Navy, Air Force, and Duke are the ones rolling in to town. The big challenge is getting the players to keep their heads in the game after a 1-7 start, and that's just what Charlie Weis and his assistants are going to have to show that they're able to do.

There are no more excuses. In the month of November, pretty much every conceivable advantage - the home field, the bye week, the experience of the first two-thirds of the season, the level of talent on the roster - will be on the side of the Irish. Anything short of dominance will be a huge disappointment.
