The good, the bad, and ugly of 2007

With 4 games left and no hope for a winning record, we can look back on this season and reflect on what was good, bad and ugly.

The Good: Talented Fr. and Soph. got meaningful game experience. It looks like they are going to get more as these last four games play out. Their performance will be judge by these games and not just the controlled conditions of the Blue/Gold game. They also learned or hopefully learned what a bad taste losing leaves you with. They should have learned that hard work added to the talent will make them better. With all the defection they should now understand what being part of a team means. Also, under the good CW learned more about become a head coach and dealing with losing, college kids, and practice intensity. Recruiting is probably at its highest since Lou's heyday. We are getting recruits, top notch recruits while losing. What is going to happen when we start winning!!!

The Bad: Losing, losing big!! Not playing as a unit (O-line). Whether we are 0-5 or 5-0 people are out to get us and you have to show up every play or they will embarrass you. Transfers are bad only in that the media and other coached see a kid leaving and will use that to whatever advantage they can to put us down. However, if you win kids can transfer and no one will talk about it after the first 48 hours (USC transfer this summer come to mind). If a kid does not want to be here for whatever reason it is best for them to move on, not only athletic wise, but academic wise. Only 214 player get drafted every year and roughly half make an NFL team. So there is more to a transfer than just playing time, or at least there should be!

The Ugly: Where do we start here. The media of course and their dredge up the Ty was fired because of his color and CW is not better after three years! This is a tiresome topic and one that little research has been done on the part of the people spewing this topic over the airwaves. The fan base. Man have some of us gone over the edge. CW went from Rockne to Faust in one year!!! I can not attest to the credentials of the of the posters on the web, but man it sounds like every poster out their is either Lombardi, Noll, Landry or Walsh!! It is very easy for us to sit in out recliner and question play calling, when in fact we have not been to practice or at the game. Yes, CW should throw down file more, but last time I checked the QB needed to be upright to do that!!! Calling players out by name. I find this the ugliest of offenses. These are just kids 18 - 22. This is not their profession, yet. Remember we are not a school that allows its players to have their own dorm and light class loads. Just as we have issues that we have to deal with while working, they also have issues to deal with during the season. I am sure they are doing their best, why call them out by name and criticize them. How many of us would like someone to post or blog about us after everyday at work!!!

Finally as Jimmy V said, don't give up, never give up. I am as sad and disappointed as any ND fans about this year, but I believe better things are to come. One year does not make a coach or a team. Of all our great coaches, Knute, Leahy, Ara, Lou, I believe Ara is the only one not to have a .500 or losing season. Hopefully this is CW and ND's last for a very, very long time.

The great still lies ahead.
With the season winding down, the coaches are already starting preparations towards next season. Here is the great part. While many teams will be practicing for their upcoming bowl games this December, ND's coaching staff will be hammering the recruiting scene. This will give them the edge they need to secure the #1 recruiting class in the country this year and start the ball rolling on the 09 class. I read something recently from a recruiting expert and he said that we should expect a few more transfers next year, because they will be passed on the depth charts by the tremendous athletes that CW is recruiting.

These next few months will be vital to any hopes for a NC run in the near future. I can't wait.

Well, thats the bright side I didnt realize. However, I was hoping a bowl game would give the underclassman an additional month of practice, even if it was the Shamrock Farms Milk Bowl.

The Good - its almost over....

The Bad - talented Fr. / So. don't really look like they are as good as advertised relative to their peers...case in point = Armando Allen vs. Joe McKnight vs. Noel Devine. Granted those other players have exponentially better blocking, but even on KR Allen has not really been overly impressive. Being the best RB on this year's Irish is like being the best floating seat cushion on the Titanic...at a minimum, we can all agree that an explosive player like Golden Tate is the best big play threat we have, but his season-long highlight reel consists of FOUR catches, 1 TD and a lesser role in each of the last 4 games. I don't expect 100-yd days from Tate or Allen or Aldridge or Hughes every week, but we have seen almost no flashes of brilliance the likes of a McKnight PR or Devine run or return. In other words, these guys don't appear to have the super high ceilings of say Percy Harvin...

The Ugly - ANYTHING related to the O-Line - from Sam Young's lack of progress or downright regression, to the carousel at Guard with no real answers emerging from Olsen, Bemenderfer, Stewart, Webb et. al., to Sullivan's god-awful performance all year (did anyone else notice that tOSU's center was able to fire off perfect shotgun snaps all night WITH HIS OFF-HAND?!?!?! after breaking his right hand and STILL outplaying Sully against PSU).

I watched parts of 4 or 5 games yesterday and focused only on the lines and tackling. I knew in the first drive of the game that PSU was doomed against OSU because I have seen tackling like they had from the secondary all year - they simply were getting drag-down tackles (where a DB grabs hold and hopes gravity does the rest - much like Zibby all year) while the OSU DBs were laying serious wood on the PSU players. In fact, the only defender on PSU that seemed to consistently deliver a blow was Connor. I like Mo Crum as much as the next guy, but aside from the UCLA game, he too is a drag-down tackler and not a very big hitter....Toryan Smith was supposed to be a big hitter and I have yet to see it...ND's D is better than previous years by avoiding the big pass plays most of the year, but their tackling remains very pedestrian at best....

On the O-line the difference was even more pronounced between 'good' teams and ND...

The second OSU TD (the WR screen to #9) was blocked PERFECTLY. They had a situation that I have seen several times this year for ND - a fast man with the ball and two blockers in front of him (think any screen that has had Allen with the ball and 2 blockers in front of him. The OSU guys did the one thing they had to do - they HIT the PSU defenders. In nearly EVERY case for ND this year the only thing the OL hits is air or dirt.

There's a looooooooooooooooooong way to go before ND can even sniff a MNC with blocking like that on the frontlines.

I have posted in other areas of the devastating effects of having virtually no experience ANYWHERE on offense (and the fact that the 2 5th year guys have basically played themselves right out of NFL day one draft status), and we all have gnashed our teeth over the apparent lack of fundamentals being taught by the coaching staff (blocking and tackling are just the most egregious).

Can those technique and coaching errors be fixed? Absolutely.
Can the under-producing 'star' players (Allen, Tate, Aldridge, Hughes, Clausen) begin to show more behind an improved line? I sure hope so because if they can't then the problems at ND will go much deeper than this one year entry into football purgatory...

If ya'll can't see past the record, then all there will be is ugly. I have seen some real positives this year. Aside from our crappy offense, JC and ES are/will improve each game.
Our WR position is doing the same, and look for Floyd and Kamara to start next year, with a bunch of guys coming off the bench with valuable experience.
Smith, Kuntz, Neal, and McCarthy have been nice surprises this year. Bruton has claimed his spot at safety.
Our commits see what is happening here, we should too.

The "progress" thing is funny ... if you take out the UM and SC games, it almost looks like we actually made some. Then again, the offense did really struggle against UCLA and BC as well.

Well, our youngsters against a bunch of seniors and fifth years are going to struggle. I have a much greater appreciation for experience than I did before.

I see a lot of other teams playing freshman & sophmores and they are winning games.
Plus we now 7-8 weeks into the season and there hasn't been the progress you would expect from this team
