This is a name I have seen frequently as one of the players that jumped ship on this team and this coach early in the season. I believe someone mentioned overhearing him calling Charlie a 'fat bastard' and getting 'exactly what he deserved.'

Is there any validity to this? Is anyone on campus or 'in the know' able to shed light on this? I will certainly not pass judgment without more information, but if true, this certainly sounds like classless behavior towards a coach that respected a player so much that he made room for a 5th captain on this year's team. I am sure his displeasure about this season would be better served mentoring our younger players and forming some cohesion for the component of our team that could take our program to the next level, or send it into oblivion for a long time.

it just doesnt make sense. even if he was to the point where only cared about himself, it would still be in his best interest to play hard. it's confusing as well as disconcerting.

I don't know if all that is actually true (I certainly hope not), but I do know the effect that upperclassmen on their way out can have on the direction of the program. My junior year in high school, we were having a season much like ND's right now. The seniors ahead of me essentially quit on the team and the coach, and it set us back even into the offseason after they were gone. If Sullivan and the other seniors really care about the program, they will help the young guys, because even though these last four games might not mean anything to them, they are hugely important for the future.

yeah, that reminds me of my high school football playing days. i remember the last game my junior year, when it was clear we were going to be eliminated from the playoffs, a senior on the team, in the huddle as the game was nearing the fourth quarter, made us (the younger guys) promise we were going to work hard and get into the playoffs our senior year.

I know my high school stories may be irrelevant or uninteresting, but I'll never forget the class and humility that high school kid had. he wanted us to experience something he never got to (and we did, we made it to the playoffs the next year). younger guys really need the leadership from older guys.

Agreed. Not competing in any of these games could be catastrophic and send ND back to the Ice Age in terms of football success and relevance.

I hope it is all Internet gossip about Sully. I'm sure he worked hard in the offseason to try and get this offense ready to succeed. I am sure it is frustrating as a 5th year that has put as much sweat as he has into this program to see the results this season had brought, although the comments that were alleged came pretty early in the season.

Let's hope that these 5th years and true seniors that won't be back get what this school is all about and understand that setting the attitude and effort expected is a major contribution to what we all believe is going to be the return of an elite program in the NEAR future.

I don't think Sully would do that. He has a NFL job waiting for him based on his performance so even if he felt that way it would seem like he would keep it to himself and work his tale off to be the stud on the o-line.

I don't believe it either, especially since Charlie made him a captain before the season started and said such great things about him. Plus, Sully just doesn't seem like that kind of guy.

I've only seen one blog with this alleged statement and the author wouldn't reveal his source.

I've also seen postings on other sites from alleged "irish fans" about all of the recruits we're losing. So it wouldn't surprise me if the one blogger who started the Sullivan and 5th yr seniors rumor is not truly a ND fan.

Based on what I've read/heard/seen, I don't find the rumors completely implausible.

Which recruits are we losing again?

Well sure, there's a chance for anything:
Lloyd: What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together?
Mary: Well, that's pretty difficult to say.
Lloyd: Hit me with it! I've come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
[pause]
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance.
