I'm convinced that EastonPAFan is either HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, or that creepy computer girl from the resident Evil movies.

From a management seminar...

From a management seminar...

I'm convinced that EastonPAFan is either HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, or that creepy computer girl from the resident Evil movies.

It describes the change in mindset. Once sure that ND would
rise above the current mess, but now not sure that it will
occur this season. Why?

Because after watching the game a second time, ND should have
won. Boston College is NOT that good. It is not that the
passing game is poor, but the rushing is just as bad. Why
so crappy? I do not put the blame on the roster.

Now to this business about "creepy computer girl, etc." No,
No, No. If that were the case, the motto would have been:

LMAO.

Tom, part of the reason the running game was so ineffective was that the #1 back left the game with an injury. Hughes - five rushes for six yards - was hardly up to being an every-down replacement, and we all know that Allen isn't ready to be anything more than a change-of-pace guy.

I'll do my best to extend this thread...

Could our 'paradigm shift' (too funny...I love that Jack Welch) have anything to do with the fact that so many players did not know what their roles were going to be this year? With few exceptions (Sully, Sam Young), the offense just has a 'wing it' feel to it (And by 'wing it' I mean we'll figure out who plays as we go, not pass the ball deep downfield).

I know Charlie is trying to lead this team like Belicheck runs his, but these college kids need to know where they stand. All of this secrecy with the media has not paid off this season, and I think it messes with the minds of our players as well. If we had our offense and defense depth charts close to settled 10 days before GT, I am confident we would not be staring at 1-6.

It's hard for me to blame Weis for the uncertainty about guys' roles this year, especially given their inexperience. I think he'd be the first to tell you that his NFL mentality bit him in the ass this year, and that he's had to change things there, and also that the gameplanning for at least GT and UM was a disaster. I also agree with you that the secrecy surrounding the QB situation was a bad idea. But how was Weis supposed to know that, say, Travis Thomas would be so bad, or Robby Parris so good, or that the Young-to-left-tackle experiment would flop, or that Neal and Smith would be beasts at OLB? Moreover, obviously he had no way to know that Hand would get arrested, that Wenger, Romine, Brown, and Grimes would all go down with injuries, and so on.

I'm not saying that Weis has done a 100% perfect job of evaluating talent this year; the amount of switching around definitely suggests that mistakes were made. But it's hard to do that really well based on practice alone, with guys who haven't seen real game action; in the NFL, that's what preseason is for.
