This school should win State Championship every year with all the D-1 players they have.

I believe he would project as a DT. Wouldn't be surprised to see Simon as a top 10 overall kid in the 2009 class. He has really long arms and uses them effectively to get people away from his body. His his lateral speed is amazing for his size, is unblockable and is strong as an ox.

Insiders at BP say that he (and Marcus Hall from Cleveland Glenville) are OSU leans.

They are sophs? How could you lean seriously when you haven't gotten the national attention yet?

To answer the obvious, national attention is not a prerequisite for leaning. John Simon goes to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, a parochial school. He is in touch with some insiders over at BP. From what I gather, he has been an OSU fan all his life.

Marcus Hall = Glenville, Cleveland (Ted Ginn Sr.) => OSU offer = Buckeye.

John was the second member of the class of 2009 to be offered a scholarship by Ohio state.

I'm not sure of Notre Dame's camp schedule, but I believe he has either already attended camp or is planning to attend camp at Notre Dame.

The kid is just a physical specimen.

I think you should take off the OLB part of his heading because of him weighing 265 pounds as a sophomore.

John says (scout article) that his early leaders are OSU, ND, Pitt and PSU.

I wouldn't be suprised to see him get an early offer. Sept. 1st is gameday, but we all know Weis won't let recruiting take a back seat such as what he did with Rudolph before a game last year and visiting Clausen Sept. 1st of his Jr. year and he was the only coach to do that. He once attended Wellington Mara's funeral in NY/NJ (I forget) in the morning and then flew out to Cali in the afternoon to see Konrad play his game.

Being from Youngstown I made a call to one of my friends earlier to see if he heard any word as to if ND offered Simon. He said he hasn't talked Jon in a couple of days but said he'll ask when he sees him. I could tell you right now that this is a 4 team race ND, tOSU, Oklahoma and PSU. All four schools have tremendous ties to Mooney and he won't entertain any other offers. Now, here's where I get excited about this kid, my friend said that he was at the gym a couple of weeks ago and watched Jon bench 465lbs. Holy sh#t! this kid barely a week into his Jr. year of high school.

Thanks for this! Any insight you can offer will be much appreciated ...

How many DI players do they have?
I don't know about juniors other than Simon, but they have Zordich (PSU), Beachum (PSU), McCarthy, and a couple of others including, if I remember right, Hill (Oklahoma or Nebraska). Cardinal Mooney is a perennial powerhouse program.

Recently picked up an official offer from ND, and with that John becomes the first player in the class of '09 to have an official offer from ND. He will also be visiting this ND this weekend for the MSU game with Dan McCarthy.

Scout rates him a 5 star

DT Johnny Simon Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney
Working the Scout.com Combine tour and seeing as many games and players that I do, I feel I have a pretty good bead on who is who among the top defensive linemen in the country. I would put Johnny Simon against anyone in the nation, regardless of class. Yes, he is that good. Simon is built better than most college defensive tackles and he has as good a get off as I have seen in a high school player. He is a tireless worker and just an outstanding young man.

Recent Scout article

Youngstown (Ohio) Cardinal Mooney defensive tackle Johnny Simon is a specimen. At 6-3, 275-pounds, Simon looks like an NFL prospect already. This summer we first saw Simon at the University of Pittsburgh Football Camp and he dominated the competition.

Scout.com then saw Simon in action at the Herbstreit Challenge against a very solid Gateway team. During the first quarter, Simon struggled at times, but as the game went on Simon got stronger and took over the game.

When Simon uses his hands, he is a load to handle. As is the case with any young player he tends to forget that once in a while. He is very explosive off the snap and often commands a double-team. It's no coincidence that the linebacker's at Cardinal Mooney make a ton of tackles.

Simon is tremendous in pursuit and is athletic enough that if he makes a mistake and penetrates too deep, he can make up the lost ground and still make a play.

Simon holds a number of offers from the likes of Illinois, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Stanford. Penn State and Simon have shown mutual interest in eachother, but the Nittany Lions do not offer juniors until after signing day. It's likely that Simon can name his suitor.

Below are some clips of Simon in action this year against Pennsylvania power Gateway. Simon rotates along the defensive line and is No. 54

Well at that size he really would fit perfectly into the mold of the big DE we need for the 3-4. Though I would still imagine OSU is going to be tough to beat for his services, he really could fit well into a team that runs the 3-4...cough, come to ND, cough.

Here is a funny read about Johns team. I'll post his season stats this weekend

Published:Thursday, November 1, 2007

Over my 61⁄2 years at The Vindicator, I’ve never been afraid to shake things up and make bold predictions in print. Today is no different.

Ready? OK. I think Cardinal Mooney will win the Div. IV state football championship.

Now I know what you’re thinking. Courageous, right?

What can I say? I’m going with my gut on this one. And my gut tells me that in my 61⁄2 years here, there’s only two teams that could hang with this year’s Mooney team: last year’s Mooney team, which won the state title, and the 2002 Warren Harding team, which lost in the Div. I state final.

I think this year’s team is better than both those teams.
