Leader OSU with ND and Michigan trailing.

That was an assumption made by an O$U writer, because O$U is the only school he'll be campinng at. Based off of what I've heard it's ND slightly ahead a O$U at this point with a little bit of a bigger gap back to Michigan.

I'm going to get flamed for this but I think he's leaning towards Ohio State at this juncture. I'll even venture to say heavily.

I don't think he's leaning heavily anywhere, if he's leaning anywhere at all(I have no clue frankly).

I will say that Garrett is probably the recruit that our coaching staff will invest the most time in this summer. He's arguably the top prospect on our board at this time. We're looking to take one DT, and they've pretty much focused their entire effort on Garrett. I also know our o-line commits are pushing hard for Garrett. I hope our effort pays off, but it's hard for me to be confident about an Illinois(not a traditional OSU recruiting ground) kid from a Chicago area Catholic school.

I will say he would be one of the five most important players in our class if we get him.

If you haven't seen film on this guy, do yourself a favor and find some. He just never stops. He's balls to the wall aggressive. I also saw a video of him wrestling in the championship match at the Ironman at Walsh Jesuit high school, one of the premier high school wrestling tournaments in the entire country, and he was borderline dominant. Wrestling helps so much with d-lineman, and you can really see how it's helped Garrett. His footwork and his hands are amazing, probably among the best in the nation.

Whats your basis for saying that? Is it just opinion or is it backed up by some fact? Go Irish!
My bad. Should've clarified properly. Not an opinion. There is someone posting on BP that is very close to Garrett and is verified by BP moderators. He says pretty much what napoleonbuck said. The OL recruits as well as Stoneburner are recruiting him hard. He says that he likes the fact that OSU has recruited these O-linemen, and seems to want to practice against them. Also he likes that OSU has several wrestlers transformed to DTs and sent to NFL.

I think he'll end up a cooler pooper.

But there are still good DL on our board.

There are enough sources indicating that Goebel is leaning toward OSU to believe that where there is smoke there is fire here. OSU most likely has more than just a "slight advantage" here, and there are a lot of signals to indicate that.

Going to just an OSU camp this summer in and of itself might not be that significant except for the fact that Goebel skipped an opportunity to attend the ND Elite Camp last weekend in order to visit OSU, even though he was in South Bend just a few days earlier. It would have taken just a slight re-shuffling of his schedule to accomodate attendance at the Elite camp, which would have indicated a stronger interest in the Irish.

OSU has shown Goebel more love than the Irish as he is their #1 D prospect at this point. In some cases, this is a significant factor, e.g. Brandon Newman.

Don't forget that academics is an issue here, and Goebel's post ND visit comments talked a lot about academic issues, a little more than you normally see after a visit. It may be that the academic requirements of ND (e.g. all First Year students are required to follow a similarly structured and relatively difficult course schedule) compared to OSU (basically no academic requirements for football players except to show up at class a few times a week) may be a swing point here. As has been mentioned in this forum many times before not everyone is interested in the academic aspect of playing CFB, and if they are not, ND is not the right place for them.

ND may be in Goebel's Top 3, but at this point in time that appears to be about as promising as being in Aghayere's Top 3 when Texas is one of the other 2. In fact, it may be even less promising.

I could be wrong here, but tOSU was recruiting him heavily for wrestling. They even gave him the option of participating in both sports, which collegiately would be extremely grueling I would assume.

He is familiar with Ohio State probably more so than any other school.

These were his comments after his visit to South Bend.....

“I was at Notre Dame on Wednesday,” said Goebel of his trip to South Bend. “When I got there, I sat down with Corwin Brown and then I met with coach Weis for forty-five minutes. They said they can see me at all three positions up front, but that they wanted to bring me in as an end in the 3-4. When they went into the 4-3, I’d be a tackle. Coach Weis was really honest and up front. He seemed like an awesome guy. I was really impressed when I walked away from our conversation.”

“I think the education at Notre Dame is better than at other schools,” opined Goebel. “They also have a higher graduation rate. They had one of the highest graduation rates in the country last year. I met with a computer application person and the academic people. I sat down with the people that were in charge of the tutoring for the football team. They went through the program and went over what my schedule might be like. The first time I went to Notre Dame I was a little intimidated by the academics, but I left pretty confident that I could fit in.”

--------I see it as an ND/OSU race with UM as an outside shot. No one knows who really is leading except the opinion of a Buckeye Scout writer (It must've not been enough of a lead if they didn't change his interest to OSU to high.)

He's taken two unofficials to South Bend.

One Junior Day in March and last week. Also good.

I saw on Rivals a headline of: Bucks closing in on another big recruit.

Than there was a picture of Garret. (Same one as page 1 of his profile here).

Is it possible that all of our D line verbals have him looking in another direction?

-------Could be but I think it's just he likes OSU better.

They have been on this guy longer than the Irish, so it wouldn't be a shock if OSU won him over. I think ND still has a good shot at him, but we may have joined the race a little too late. We'll see though, but even the OSU fans I talk to say he's not going to commit within the next week or anything, so I think its just a headline designed to lure you in. He's still planning in visiting Michigan, so... 'nuff said.

Thanks. I've heard it in the works for a while, but didn't quite get a concrete date.

1. He is the first DT they offered and the only one non committed who they've offered thus far. tOSU was his third offer overall after Vandy and Illinois.

2. Got his tOSU offer in late February. ND offered him in late April. That means Weis, Ianello and Brown had two months of non offered talking to catch up on.

3. Maybe he does like them better. They've put an incredible amount of stock into recruiting him and it shows because they have only offered one other kid (Miami verbal). And I'm sure even with a 2.7 GPA GG can count Cwynar, Williams, Newman and Hunter makes four.

Just to clarify some topics, Goebel has said that he would like to decide before his football workouts start (whenever that is).

We have offered 3 DTs in this class so far. Goebel, Mobley (you're probably aware, I think this is a long long LONG shot) and Thompson (a 5-star JUCO DT, Miami Verbal, who our staff seem to be going after really strongly). Thompson wouldn't matter for Goebel because in all likelihood, Thompson would be gone before Goebel gets any serious PT (IMO Goebel might redshirt).

On top of that, Dewawn Whitner (sp) and Shawntel Rowell *might* be offered as DT during camp, especially Rowell.

Well the writing is on the wall with Goebel basically.....

From BP:
Garrett is spending plenty of time with Stoney and Sweat while his father is also talking tOSU with Sweat's father. Also, BK says ND is ready to concede Garrett to tOSU so as to pursue other targets.

--------Ethan Johnson, come on down!

IK, Everybody on here knows I'm a bucknut at heart. That was disclosed by acamp, HCTI, and Goshen a month ago. I have been actively sabotaging our efforts at recruiting him and Sweat, and glad to see that it has all paid off. Now if I could only get Tressel to give me a consultant job, I would be set. All of you are suckers!

Sounds good to me. I think Goeabel is good and he is what we need. But we are getting that already in our current DL and we need more of an end... like Aghayere, Johnson, Lewis-Moore. We have to be picky now.
