LSUPD arrested ex-University football player Troy Giddens on Sunday at 2:54 a.m. after he allegedly injured current football player Joseph Barksdale.

Giddens, 19, of 909 W. Hanson Ave., was booked in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second degree battery and simple battery, said LSUPD Capt. Russell Rogé.

This is Giddens' second arrest in three weeks.

Rogé said Giddens punched Barksdale, a freshman defensive lineman from Detroit, and broke his jaw.

Rogé said Barksdale was later admitted to Baton Rouge General hospital.

Rogé said officers responded to a noise complaint at a building in West Campus Apartments.

Rogé said upon arrival, officers saw a large group of people walking away from the building and noticed Barksdale sitting on a bench holding his jaw.

"There was a disagreement between two other people, words were exchanged and Giddens hit the victim," Rogé said.

Rogé said LSUPD thinks Barksdale did not attempt to retaliate against Giddens.

"He was hit, and he was hurt bad enough to where he was out of the fight at that point," Rogé said. "There was no indication there was a fistic encounter between both of them."

Giddens was previously arrested and charged on counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling and identity theft April 9.

Giddens and another former player, Zhamal Thomas, who was arrested for the same incident as Giddens on April 9, were dismissed from the football team April 19 by coach Les Miles.

Giddens and Thomas allegedly stole the wallet of Nicole Crochet, a freshman on the University women's golf team and made fraudulent charges on her credit card.

An employee of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison said Giddens was released on $12,000 bail Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Sports Information Director Michael Bonnette said despite Giddens' dismissal from the team, he is still a University student.

"He didn't get kicked out of school, and he has his football scholarship until the end of the semester," Bonnette said. "If he wants to continue playing football and transfer to another school, he has to finish the semester."

I'm sorry, and maybe I'm missing something here, but wtf is a "fistic encounter"?

"He was hit, and he was hurt bad enough to where he was out of the fight at that point," Rogé said. "There was no indication there was a fistic encounter between both of them."
