Here's a quote taken from Seth Davis, a columnist at SI. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/seth_davis/02/01/hoop.thoughts/index.html

I hope Notre Dame fans realize most of the schools the Irish play and recruit against wouldn't have suspended Kyle McAlarney for a single game, much less an entire semester. ND is still probably bound for the tournament, but this could have been a really dangerous team if it had McAlarney.

First off, he's 100% correct on both counts. But while he considers the second to make the first reprehensible, I consider the second to only make the first even more worthwhile. What other school would do such a thing? Can't think of any, except service academies. And you know what, I can't imagine that Kyle would ever do something that stupid again. Driving with a blunt isn't smart, and because of his suspension, he's probably not ever going to touch the stuff again. He's learned there are consequences for your actions, and you have to make good choices. At any other school, a kid gets a wrist slap, and learns that if you are good at basketball, you get to do whatever you want, no consequences. See Kobe Bryant rape case for one, and hundreds of other examples. People may think it's "harsh," but I for one am proud that our university put what was right over what was easy, and what was actually better for the person than the player.

I love Notre Dame.

I agree. I'm glad ND stuck to it's rules, even if it's rules are at times questionable.

Yeah me too. I honestly thought the punishment was a little harsh, but its good to know that atleast at notre dame, they take things like that seriously, and just because they're an athlete doesn't mean they're be treated differently. I'm sure McAlarney has learned from his mistake. He may have learned it the hard way, but he still learned. But, you have to remember that the substance he was found with is illegal. So, as much as I understand why people were upset over it, you can't really blame ND for setting things straight can you?

Notre Dame is what it is because this sort of thing. Maybe not always suspensions for pot possesion or whatever but sticking to academics and morals in general. Watching interviews this year with guys like Chris Frome, Tommy Z etc. etc. you realize through and through these are gentleman with great talents not just great talents. People like Darius Walker don't talk about the grotto in their NFL announcement speaches unless they mean it there is no reason to. Bottom line is this is a great school for people who care about being well rounded and not giving in to today's society downfalls. All today's students could have been students at ND in 1940. And if it that means a student represenitive of ND must not be caught smoking pot then I am all for it.
