I think they get their first true road game win. Syracuse has been inconsistent this year, and I think Carter redeems himself with a big game.

Notre Dame-Syracuse Preview

Halfway through its conference schedule, Notre Dame is right in the mix of the competitive Big East. That could change in a hurry if the 21st-ranked Fighting Irish don't improve their play away from home.

Notre Dame begins a critical stretch of three straight road games Tuesday at Syracuse.

After finishing 12th in the 16-team Big East last season, Notre Dame (17-4, 5-3) is in fifth place at the midpoint of the conference schedule, thanks to a perfect home record.

The Irish are 15-0 at the Joyce Center, but they have been unable to carry that success to the road, going 0-3 with losses to conference foes Georgetown, Villanova and St. John's by an average margin of 12.0 points.

Notre Dame, which opened conference play with five straight road losses last season, has dropped 14 of its last 17 Big East road games. The Irish play at South Florida on Saturday, then conclude their stretch of road games with a Feb. 8 visit to DePaul.

The Carrier Dome has been especially tough for Notre Dame, which has lost seven of its last eight games there. The Orange (15-6, 4-3) have won the last three meetings between the schools overall, including an 88-82 victory at the Joyce Center in last seasons only matchup, and 13 of the last 15 against Notre Dame.

Notre Dame fared better against Villanova at home on Saturday, winning 66-63 after trailing by three points with 3:47 remaining.

"I think this is a step forward for us psychologically," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "For us to have to scratch and claw and grind -- we haven't had to do this here against a good team."

Colin Falls led the Irish with 23 points. He is averaging 17.5 points in his last four games, after averaging just 8.2 over the previous six.

The senior guard scored a team-high 18 points -- all of them on 3-pointers -- in the loss to the Orange last season.

Syracuse (15-6, 4-3) is 12-3 at the Carrier Dome, including two wins in three conference home games.

The Orange, however, return home after dropping consecutive road games -- 64-60 at St. John's on Jan. 21 and 76-71 to Louisville on Saturday.

After taking a 65-51 lead on the Cardinals with 9:40 to play Saturday, the Orange managed just one field goal and turned the ball over five times in the final nine minutes to spoil coach Jim Boeheim's 1,000th game on the Syracuse sideline.

"We just have to keep working hard, get more consistent. It's not out of hand," Boeheim said. "We'd like to do a little bit better job, finish better when we get to the basket, and avoid turnovers. I'm just concerned how we play as a team, what we have to do to get better."

Syracuse is 1-3 this season against ranked teams, with the lone victory coming on Jan. 7, 70-58 at then-No. 15 Marquette.

the game is on TV, right? I have a schedule that says it's on espn2 at 7, but then I'm looking at a TV guide for today and don't see it...

but I think Russell will definitely bring his A game tonight. He'll bounce back. and the team will get a road win.

ok, in answer to my own question, the game seems to have been moved to ESPNU. although I definitely have a schedule from the beginning of the season that says this game was supposed to be on espn2.

It sucks not having espnu. I have missed so many games this year because of it. I hope ND pulls it off this game. They need to win on the road to gain a little confidence for the big dance.

Go to a sports resturaunt. Even though I have ESPNU, I'll be at Buffalo Wild Wings, playing triva, watching ND, and flirtng with hot girls. It's hard to beat that.

Notre Dame rides 61-point first half past Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Luke Harangody had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 21 Notre Dame beat Syracuse 103-91 on Tuesday night behind an impressive display of 3-point shooting.

Notre Dame (18-4, 6-3 Big East) won for the first time in four conference road games and halted a three-game losing streak against the reeling Orange (15-7, 4-4), who lost their third straight game.

The Irish missed their first three 3-pointers, but it didn't take them long to find the range. Notre Dame went 10-for-14 on 3s for the rest of the opening half, with Russell Carter and Colin Falls each hitting four, and most were wide-open looks against the defenseless Orange.

Notre Dame scored 18 points off 10 Orange turnovers in the half and left the floor with a 61-42 lead, just five points off the team record set against Ball State in 1964 and matched in 1986 against Miami.

It also was just four points off the all-time record for points allowed in a half by the Orange. Syracuse gave up 65 in the second half in a 97-85 loss to Navy in March 1986 and hadn't allowed 60 points in the first half of a game since 1988.

Carter finished with 18 points and Falls had 16 before fouling out in the closing minutes, while Zach Hillesland had 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and Tory Jackson 19 points and seven assists.

Demetris Nichols had 29 points to lead Syracuse, Terrence Roberts had 20 points and six rebounds, and Darryl Watkins had 10 points and six rebounds before fouling out in the final two minutes. Eric Devendorf, who had led Syracuse in scoring in five of seven conference games, did not score, missing all 11 shots he took.

After Nichols hit a 3 to give Syracuse an 11-9 lead at 16:30, the Irish began their barrage. Carter and Falls each made a pair of 3s to key a 16-4 run.

The Orange retaliated with a 13-5 surge, with Nichols scoring five straight points and Roberts beginning and ending it with slam dunks.

The second dunk moved Syracuse within 30-28 midway through the period as the Carrier Dome crowd erupted, but the Irish quickly quieted the place with an 11-point spurt.

Falls and Carter each hit 3-pointers, Harangody had a slam dunk, and Jonathan Peoples swished a 3 from the left corner -- his only shot of the period -- to give Notre Dame a 41-28 lead with 7:35 remaining.

Syracuse moved back within 10 points three times, the last when Paul Harris fed Roberts for a dunk to make it 50-40 with 2:46 left.

The Irish finished the half with an 11-2 run, with Jackson converting a pair of layups in the final minute.

Syracuse fell by as many as 28 after Jackson's free throw made it 75-47 with 14:04 left, but the Orange never gave up. Josh Wright's layup with 3:03 left completed a 14-4 run that moved Syracuse within 90-79.

Unfazed, the Irish made 13 straight free throws in the final three minutes and finished the game 11-for-23 from beyond the arc. The most 3-pointers allowed by Syracuse was 16 in a 108-69 loss at DePaul last March.

Jackson was a nice surprise. I think he was like 11 for 14 with his Free Throws.

I think Jackson will be a very good point guard. It's just a matter of growing up fast now.

yeah, we've already seen that he can contribute with his assists and his steals. Any extra offense from him right now is just an added bonus.
