The South Bend Tribune is saying that Powlus is the new QB coach:
"Powlus is expected to be named Notre Dame's new quarterbacks coach, replacing Peter Vaas, who, along with defensive coordinator Rick Minter, was fired this week."

The Article is here

So how much is Weis involved with coaching the QBs and how much has he worked with Powlus over the last two years to get him up to speed to be the new QB coach?

Being from Penna. and a Ron Powlus fan from way back I'm excited about this news.

Powlus is going to be QB coach?

Powlus is going to be QB coach?

Just saw that Powlus was going to become the QB coach in the near future. Is anyone ok with this? I mean he was good at ND but come on! You would like to have the coaches come from a pro background, or at least an experienced one. Has he ever coached before?

I didn't realize he was here already as "director of personnel development". Let's just hope his duties consist of getting the QB's uniforms ready and shagging balls for them.

You know he set a ton of records at ND...and he would have been more successful but the coach at the time was a complete twit about how you use a drop back passer like Powlus.

I sometimes wonder if Holtz was not smoking a bit of crack during those years... Powlus run the option? C'mon.

Powlus was the master of throwing the ball out of bounds! Seriously, I think he will be a good coach. And he can help Clausen with the ridiculous amount of attention and pressure, since he was in the same situation.

The point of this hiring seems pretty clear to me. Weis will take an active role in development of the QBs (like he did with Quinn), and Powlus will be there to listen and learn, and provide perspective to them about how to handle the pressure of the position.

IMO, Weis is developing Powlus the way BP and BB developed him.

Plus, all reports indicate that Powlus is a real "go to the tape" guy.

I think Powlus in many ways is the perfect choice.

Let's face it, people dog him for his playing issues...but when it comes down to it, how many downs did Weis play as a QB or RB?

Weis does a great job, yet he has ZERO experience as a QB in a game.

To me Powlus is more of a Blue & Gold game coach! I for one could not wait until he graduated and now I have to see him haunt the sideline every game...not good! Powlus only knows one thing about the QB position and that is how to under achieve and only throw to (1) receiver 90% of the time ala Mayes!!!! I think this is a BAD hire!

If Ron is going to be "helping" Jim with the attention and pressure, God help us all. Happy Feet Ron needs to forget his own past "experience" and just focus on Jim's current. I think that's best for everyone involved.

All I can remember from the Powlus years is a seriously huge void of space, except perhaps his first game vs. Northwestern when people almost pee'd themselves that that game was "the sign of things to come." Which never came.

Jimmy has already said that he really like Ron and can relate to him very well. He aslo said that Ron being there is one of the things that attracted him to ND.

Gosh, guys. The fact that Powlus didn't succeed as a player says little to nothing about what he'll be like as a coach. Frankly I think Charlie knows what he's doing here.

Oh please... Ron knows how to throw. He also knows to go with a QB's strengths. Lou was too senile or dumb in his last couple years to use Powlus correctly.

Seriously, that has to be the worst coaching of a QB I have seen in the past decade.

Guess the pro coaches did not have any luck coaching him either...I admit Lou's offense did not fit Powlus but I cannot be the only one that could not wait for him to graduate!

I just hope he is a better coach then player which is the case a lot...

Ron Powlus know the tradition of Notre Dame and can be in charge of a complex system. He will be a great coach because he knows what it's like.
